We definately could. Right now it is extremely expensive to pull oil from deep sea oil pockets, to transport that oil, and to refine it as it tends to be a different quality grade. The Middle Eastern oil is a much sweeter crude that is easier to refine. I believe we will eventually drill our own oil and invest more into those options once oil hits ~$200/barrel. At this point gas will be close to ~$8-9/gallon and it might actually save some cash for the consumer at that point.

It takes a heck of a lot more to lower the price of gas. It requires more fuel efficient vehicles, more people who car pool, more people who use public transportation, etc. If truck drivers went on strike the carriers would just hire a different trucking company and now the costs of our goods and services go up. It's a catch 22.

The reason fuel prices are high is becasue there is a huge demand for it in China, as it jumped 50% for a diesel demand there. There are other nations whose demand has also gone up.

Another reason is Oil prices are traded in US Dollars, and since the Dollar is weak right now, suppliers are demanding more US Dollars for it.

We need to force the shippers to pay more for us to make a GOOD profit.

Now how do we do that?

BY NEVER HAULING LESS THAN YOUR OPERATING COST..

I bet some of you who are failing have NEVER figured their operating cost. A operating cost SHOULD be figured in before EVERY load.

If your operating cost is $2 a mile, don't ever, ever haul a load for $1.80 a mile even if it is a BACKHAUL. Let some of the bottom feeders haul that cheap freight because they won't be in business much longer.

I had a guy tell me the other day that there is no such thing as a back haul. He said you get paid for every mile you haul someone's freight no matter which way it is going right so you shouldn't haul something cheap.

As far as the fixed incomers not surving, that is just a fact of life. Should we all go broke just to keep the costs down for them? I am sorry I work for a profit not for free.

HA Good luck on the forcing the shippers to pay more. Are you forgetting who owns this fright all they have to do is call a big trucking company or a broker they don't care if you go broke or not.Kind of like your feeling are for people who worked hard all their life and now they are on S/S.Are they are ill disabled.Maybe one day you too will be like this. Then you can say who cares about the ones on fixed income.:biggrin_2553::biggrin_2553:It can happen to you.:biggrin_25514:

Trust me my friend, there is WAY more freight out there than big truck companies! It works just fine for me, and I hardly ever bounce more than 100miles to pick up a load nor do I sit overnight empty.

Its funny how you tell a broker no way you are hauling that cheap freght and they will call you back offering more money for it. Try it sometime and see what happens.

Are you willing to work at a loss to make things affordable for the fixed incomers???

Them not havin enough money is their own problem, not our fight.

There are plenty of o/o's out there who "fly by the seat of your pants" and have NO BUSINESS MIND at all to run a business. Remeber being a o/o is not just owning a truck, you run a business and provide a service to your customers.

Here are some things I do, and I get told by my broker that I am worth the big bucks because of it.

    1. I am always clean shaven, and showered

    2. I am NEVER late and usually deliver first thing in the morning

    3. I don't whine much, but do put my foot down when needed

    5. I wear a uniformed shirt with my name, my company name and my logo on it.

    6. I wash my truck and trailer weekly and sometimes 2 a week

    7. I secure ALL of my freight even when most people would not do it (I run dry van) and am yet to have a load claim.

LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT I am very respectfull to my customers at all times!!!

Next time you are in a truck stop, shipper, reciver, repair shop, etc. etc. and look around and see what the majority of the drivers look like.

I am assumming you can't make it as a o/o with these fuel prices so I have some questions for you.

Are you a O/O or a Lease Operator?

Do you have your own authority or are you leased on to someone?

How often do you figure your operating cost?

BTW I am going to start a poll in the Ask A O/O thread about operating cost. Should be a intersting poll.
