I want something that might pay me for my efforts once I'm done. Therefore, it needs to be an "app" that is not OS specific and can work for anyone, regardless what OS or browser or smartphone they use. What I'm working with (Zoho) is web based so all you need is a current web browser and internet connection, but also the backend also automatically re-configures the data and presentation for smartphone use with free apps for Android and iOS, ALL ON THE SAME DATABASE with no need to synchronize or download or upload or copy or any of that crap. All you need is to pay for the $5 month for SQL backend hosting, buy the finished software coding "app" that I'm working on, and you can add/edit/view/report data from any computer or smartphone with no aforementioned hassles.

A thumb drive option is not practical. How you going to plug a thumb drive into your Android phone and work with whatever proprietary software database is on it?

I guess some are not grasping my thought process and goals and the inherent hurdles and limitations to get there.

Also found another cool feature built into Zoho. Add an Image field to you data and for instance when you add a receipt for reimbursement, it can prompt your camera phone to capture an image of the receipt and automatically upload it to the database for later retrieval if needed. i.e. no need to make a copy before giving original to company. Image is saved along with the related data.

Haven't played around with this yet but I can tell you that in iOS or Android this sort of feature requires a lot of coding and knowhow.

You make it sound more complex than it is. Simple cloud solution (MS, Box, Dropbox, iCloud) sync the file up and tag it to keep the local copy on the phone/tablet... Done

But seems an easy spreadsheet cloud combo isn't the direction the OP wants to go and that's ok too.

same effect. anytime you edit or add stuff. you resave (backup) the file. it overwrites itself.

But it's all automated and the end user never sees that happening... The file just resides in the cloud and on the local device... Just like million of file server/client set up world wide, just mobile.

Doesn't using the cloud have the disadvantage that you cannot work offline?
