Hey guys !
I am from Czech Republic and soon to marry and move to Canada and i was seriously thinking about taking trucking as early carrer. But as it is hard to find reliable info sometimes for foreigner i wanted to ask about few things !
What is the estimated complete price for everything connected with doing truck driving licence ?
Do you guys get to life normal social life ? In other words, do you have day or two days off after for example, 3 day drive ? I am a bit itchy about my own free time, I don't mind working for 4 days out of home, but i would like to get proper days off afterwards. I want to doing short trips anyway.
edit: forgot to say location... was thinking either Torronto or Alberta
General tips for foreigner

I paid about $7000 in Canadian funds 9 years ago to attend a professional truck driving school. The cost will change depending on where you are and what schools are available. Do not trust schools that advertise being able to get your license in a day or a week for a low price.
No, there is not a normal social life. Many of us work for several weeks at a time before going home for 2-3 days. This depends mostly on your employer and the type of schedule they require. Please keep in mind that Canada is a VERY big place. Many Canadian truck drivers haul freight between Canada and the United States, and it is not unusual to drive 3000 miles (about 5000 kilometers) in a week. It is VERY important to speak and write excellent English so that you can understand the rules and laws which we must obey, and to communicate well with others within the industry.
Toronto is a VERY expensive place to live. Calgary and Edmonton (cities in Alberta) are also expensive, but not as bad.
You will find many Canadians and Americans to be hostile towards people from other countries coming here to be truck drivers.2Girls_1Truck Thanks this. -
Hmm. The part about schelude is a bit dissapointing. I was hoping i would be able to pick a job where i would be able to sleep in my own bed every day or each 2 or 3 days. Basically short trips between cities in Canada rather than long hauls where you have to give up on your social life.
My imagination of the job was alot of for example 400-1000 mile runs per a day and ending up sleeping in my own bed with .. free weekends, i guess. I am not interested in long hauls as i move to Canada to live a life and not to make money.

Also, by foreigner I don't mean true foreigner, I wouldn't be moving in for jobs temporarily, I'd be moving in to live there.
And from what i found, mon-fri and weekend off is pretty usual, i could get around that, possibly. I would just want to ask: what kind of trucks are assigned to no-experience workers ? I can imagine it depends on the company, but in general, are the trucks much older, newer or something inbetween ? To ask directly: would the AC be granted, or not ? -
you know the dif between miles and Km ?? 400 - 1000 miles runs per a day....

Mate, there are local jobs/regional. Some are entry level.

Thanks, and yes i was typing in a hurry and mixed those two up
I more or less found out about that issue after few days of checking different resources. Though, the new thing concerns me. I looked up idling laws in Canada and for me, it look all over the place, it looks like different areas have different approach on that.
So, do you guys in practical life idle your engines over night at all times in Canada ? When its cold or too hot outside ? or just to get rid of humidity ? And if not, are your trucks equipped with APUs ? -
the way i see it is,
anyone can learn how to drive, but to become a truckdriver is more than just a cdl/permit. it is not for everybody. -
Well, theres ultimately only one way to find out. I am not choosing trucking as the possible way to go only for money, i wouldn't want to get stuck doing something that would stress me out constantly and in general. I always was up for a long trips even though it was in a free time and in regular car, but theres something.. i guess challenging, relaxing to it, driving around unknown land

i did hear in and around toronto you find schools like this tooo....
