Hi all, i was lucky enough to stumble across a general washington 10 meter, and am very new to export radios. Everything has been converted for 11m and i hooked it up this evening. Just wondering, when i had the rf power set on low, when i key up the meter barely moved, and when i talked i couldnt even hear myself with the talkback on. But when rf power is on high, my needle shoots in the red and im loud and proud, radio checks came back excellent, and had to tell drivers twice i was talking on a barefoot radio. Do these radios only work when RF is on high?

Nah , they work on both lo and hi. Usualy when you run them on low , its like a stock cb...your DK is lower and your swing is lower...then crank it on high , and your dead key is high , and your swing is high. So if you did happen to run a kicker with it , you'd run it on low and not overdrive it. I'd run it on high if it was mine...just make sure your ground is good and your SWR's are set and get to talkin. I run my General HP on high , love it.

AH makes sense...as for my ground i was just testing it hooked up via 12vlt plug which goes straight to my battery(ies) Im stumped as to why i cant get power up top in the cb cubby of my truck. I checked the fuse and its good. The stock power and ground wires in the cubby have a removable clip, i guess to remove and make it easier to wire up your power. Ya think that connector can be my issue as to why i cant get power up there?

That connector could be the problem , or something else on down the line. I'm not to saavy when it comes to tech problems like that with trucks...I have my General HP ran straight off the battery so I never had a problem like you are. Sorry I cant help you with that one man

No worries at all! I appreciate you getting back to me in the first place. I just found it very strange when my switch was on low power i could barely get my needle to move..im gonna call my cb guy tomorrow and ask him about it.

Interesting, if it's the same board as my Connex 3300, all the power switch did was change the dead key. The modulation stayed the same. Maybe someone set up the low side to be really low for amp drive?

That is quite possible. My cb guy told me to keep it on high and enjoy getting out lol. Im gonna talk to him tomorrow to get some answers. When it is on high and i key up, the needle hits max without even talking into the mic...is this normal?

The needle shouldn't be maxing out on key up.

When you key up, and the pwr switch on hi, the needle should swing right to about 8 watts on high on the meter, or maybe 3/4 on the meter. That's what's known as "dead key". Then as soon as you talk into it, the needle will swing a little more to the right, usually to around 20 watts. That's what's known as "modulation" or as some call it, "swing".

Of course there's also a meter adjustment variable resistor (VR) inside the radio that dictates how far to the right the needle will go when you key up. If one of the many "golden screwdriver" hacknicians at Bubba's CB snip n clip shop got inside and cranked the VR all the way in an attempt to bilk you out of your hard earned cash by sayin"Look! Yer meter's peggin out when ya key up...yer makin some real power there", then that might explain why the meter would be going to full on key up.

With mine on low ,when i deadkey, the needle goes to about 1/3rd of the meter...and wont max out unless im pretty much yelling into the mic...then on high , when I dead key , it goes to about 2/3'rds...a little more on the radio and completely peaks out when talking normaly. I didnt get mine done from a hackshop though...Hard Drive at Fine Tune CB here did mine up as soon as I bought it new from him. I had a 29 though from another local that would completely peg out when keying up...ended up taking it to hard drive after using it for a while and it was completely hacked up.

I have noticed this on my General Lee. Even after my tech reversed the previous hack-job, it still does this. I read somewhere that these radios can be unstable. I get out either way, but the TB is much quieter on low.

    Freightshaker613 Thanks this.
