Well, I tried Southwest, but they're on a hiring freeze right now as is every other airline. They're doing their best not to furlough pilots or flight attendants, but we'll see how that goes. I give them until the end of the year, if not at the beginning of next, to begin furloughing or "laying off" their Flight Ops employees.
My company was like SWA, until October last year... We haven't furloughed anyone in the entire history of our Airline. Until then, actually, we were doing pretty well. Interesting enough, we call them the "First 48" like the tv show, but the number is actually 48. Now we're sitting at 233 or something like that, with an estimated 667 to be furloughed by this time NEXT year

What would be a good company that would take someone with CDL 6 years experience, but haven't driven in 6 years. I talked to SHIFT the other day they told me I needed a refresher course. I was looking into Trans Am, LCT, CRE. Any comments would be great.
-
Ouch, well good luck Sean!
-
You are a lucky man to have been DQ'd by CR.
-
there been a few companies that have posted for jobs in the last month.
May, swift, warner, england, gordon, and few others. Check craiglist. There always mom and pop operation looking for a few drivers. to me. There seem to be freight coming from out west to back east. The problem is finding freight from east to west. You can also check out Ruan. They haul for Fry's market. a tip here. Go in person to apply. you will get faster results this way. -
CentraFla in all likelyhood you will be required to take a refresher course. I was out for about the same length of time and had to take a refresher course. I went the CRE course and cost me $500. I left shortly after I paid it off.

Newbies, my experience.
Graduated CDL School(by the way, THE BEST in US,no foolin) outta Fremont,Ohio 4 weeks class, 4 weeks "on-the-road" training(wont spam their name but ya can email me,I'll let ya know cost $2500. I got it free courtesy from state of Ohio, my factory shut its doors.
Went with C.R. England(the recruiter visit SEEMED true
) Remember like ANY salesman/woman, they work by commission on sign ups. Some profit EVEN if you quit after only 2weeks with the company, some dont. OK........"The Story".
REMEMBER, I have NOTHING to gain OR profit by lieing, just the truth your honor.
Bused us to Brunswick,NJ. Passed that "training"...I was AMAZED at what I ALREADY knew from school, they were teaching...passed with a 97pt avg(Thank my schooling...NOT me)
Bused us(3 day journey)YUC to Salt Lake City Main Terminal, got assigned trainer, and left. If that trainer didnt say "Why in the HECK you need a trainer, you was taught well" Im lieing. Anyways, after ONLY 1 week out, he said "Im wasting my time with you(what a complement), come on lets hit a phone and Im going to tell them to route us back so you can be assigned your truck". YEAH right, they told him no, I stood right there....WHY did they tell him no?(Glad you asked)...The company can make MORE money as team driving than to let me go single....PATHETIC. So, now Im out 6weeks earning squat. Do the math newbies maybe 200 rookie teams out driving and paying the trainee SQUAT.....big bucks for them....the wheels just kept on a rollin, to which my wife had a VERY hard time paying bills on a trickle paycheck(bad time)........DOWNFALL #1.
DOWNFALL #2 : Got my truck and ONLY 5 months out, I had been OUT 4 weeks WITHOUT hometime. The alphabet is big and BOY let me tell ya they used EVERY letter for an excuse
. Earlier I had gotten home, OH I'd say, every 2.5 weeks for 2 days(SEE the extra .5 they stretch?) THEN it hit the fan and I kicked and screamed with my Driver Manager, "Whats the deal, Ive been out 3 weeks, no hometime....then it turned into FOUR weeks. Well, having complained OVER his head worsened things for me. Im in Chicago for a pickup home, and they tell me, "We need you to run it to Toronto, THEN we'll try and get ya home. Needless to say I stood right there at the ph and banged it saying "HELLO, you hearing me?, get me HOME NOW(wouldnt recommend the banging part, BUT you get my drift). So, here I am, good school, want to run, and I have an attitude.
Took the truck STRAIGHT home to Ohio, parked it, cleaned it out, and Qualcomed them EXACTLY where it was(made sure it was a secured place, I didnt hate the truck,JUST THEM, I done nothing wrong). of course I knew they knew where it was from tracking. I even went back 2 days in a row 2 times a day to ensure its safety. End of story...they MADE sure they docked me for the fuel and they took BOTH paychecks from me and threaten me "Its going on your DAC report for abandoning your truck and your never drive again
Yeah right I informed the next trucking company EVERYTHING and was VERY honest and they hired me telling me dont worry, we understand.
Soooo, I DONOT condone abandoning your truck BUT when push came to shove, my FAMILY was MORE important. If you deserve that kinda treatment cause your a jerkoff driver, OK, but I didnt. Always check WHILE your searching for the "turnover" rate....wonder WHY it is what it is. CAUTION, even tho truckers advise MEAN well, take it with a grain of salt and DO some thinking for yourself in determining what to beleive. Many drivers DESERVE their misgivings in trucking BECAUSE they ask for it and their attiude STINKS, they wanna drive and do nothing and get something in return. Attitude is EVERYTHING and the rest will flow to you somewhat easier. Finally, we experienced drivers KNOW you dont know what you want cause you havent been out there, we just try to help you the best way we know...Why else you think this excellent website was created and maintained? I went thru SOOO many channels at CR to complain....didnt do no good.

Hey Larz.
Most companys do not like to take people that have not driven in over 6 months, and if there is not at least 6 mo. verifiable OTR in the last 3 years they will not take you without a refresher.
The problem is that most companys (accept training companys) do not offer refreshers.
I had your same issue. Got my CDL in 1991, drove OTR a little, then local 5 years. Wento to college, did other work. Then drove a year local.
Went looking for an otr job and had to pay for a refresher. Went to Central. Was not too bad, spent a few grand learning nothing. The 8 or 9 days I was there I spent half of it teaching trainees how to back and shift.
I drove for central over a year after that and had a really good dedicated run. Only left because the wife wanted me home more. But it got me my year+ of recent verifiable. Even though I hated to pay for something I really did not need.Larz Thanks this. -
I hear ya! Thanks for the info. I am still hopeful that something will come along. I have more people looking now that are in trucking, so they are talking to people as well as me.
I hope I find a company before I run out of companies, LOL.
I have given a bit of thought to going the lease route, then maybe I would have a job.
Who knows... -
Come on! Look where you are applying to. CR England? They are just your typical bad otr company. There are hundreds of them. They all do the same thing. Treat their drivers poorly. The difference is in the color of their trucks. Go to the motor carrier scoop forum. Look at all of those companies. Avoid them. They don't just advertise for nothing.
And your quote of "I'll run not stop if need be" is one of the worst things you can do. If that is the way you want to run, don't come to california. My friends drive on these roads and don't need some tired driver, trying to make a buck, crashing into them or anyone else. That is a dumb statement to make.
