I've been with companies that make you take a 10 question test and that certifies you to haul hazmat with them, assuming you have the endorsement. If I had the endorsement I would likely be hauling ltl for fedex or one of the ltl freight companies
That 10 question test won't fly if FMCSA does an audit and checks their certification . Here are the requirements http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu.../fmcsrruletext.aspx?chunkKey=090163348004751d
Yes I do mean specialized training. Radioactive Material, certain chemicals, and explosivies( ammo is part of this) require special handling. Companies that haul these make their drivers go thru far more extensive training than the average driver. I know there is a few posters here who haul fuel. They can tell what kind of training they went thru.
One would be surprised that many of the everyday products we use when broken down to their separate indegridents(sp) they are considered to be Hazmat by the DOT. Most of these don't require extensive training for the driver.
You can ask any retailer for the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet ) for any chemical you buy (WD 40 , Simple Green , etc.) and they have to provide it .
All that being so however, could it be so wrong to get the state Hazmat endorsement on your CDL? I know I'm going to have to do it for PAM.
No it isn't wrong. Its just a lot of drivers don't want to spend the $90 and time to do it. It gives the driver more options for work when he/she has it.
I'm taking then test on monday to get it, mainly in the hopes of getting a ltl job in dallas/ft worth
