So I’ve already taken care of the permit aspect of my license. Got the tank and hazmat endorsements, DOT physical and taking care of the TWIC and Hazmat background check this week. Being in Los Angeles during this pandemic, Its looking like it will be some time before I get to do my skills test since behind the wheel tests are stopped and everything is backing up. Was planning on going to a local training place leading up to the test date I got but started to think about a place like Knight where I could get my CDL test done through them in AZ or so instead of waiting for months for the Ca DMV. Would Knight train you in AZ if you’re in California and they have a training spot there? I’ve got a connection to a local company working out of the port of LA that I could start working with as soon as I get my cdl then always hit up my good friend in upper management with JB hunt once I get some solid experience.
Here for the answer because I am also trying to get mine in so cal but would like to know how long the DMV will be #### down
Guess the behind the wheel testes open back up tentatively early February. Have to call that day to schedule but again who knows when we’ll actually get to schedule a test with the backlog just getting worse as time goes on.
Yes, and that’s probably your best shot - getting your CDL in a different state and transferring it back to California *eventually*. There’s A LOT of uncertainty between the China Flu, the NEW California strain, Newsom’s exorcism, California’s pending sale to Mexico and a number of other things specific to your state that mean you’ll be waiting a long time and there is nothing carved in stone about WHEN you’ll be able to get a California CDL. Please note: California is the MOST difficult state to transfer a CDL to. In most states you just swap your old CDL, pay a fee and walk out with a new CDL. California requires you to retest for your class C then retest for your CDL. Good luck!
Yea. This god awful cesspool of a state is just the worst. Been wanting to get out for a while now. Just trying to get started in the industry and save up some money so I can eventually move to NV or AZ and only come here on regional runs and to visit family and hit the beach every so often. Hoping it happens sooner than later.
According to the dmv website, u can just trade it in - Certain applicants may qualify to have the skills test requirement waived: If you have a valid CDL from another state that is current or has been expired for less than two years, you can surrender that license (or proof thereof). The license must have equivalent classification, endorsements, and restrictions to the one you are applying for in California.
