I'm in the Houston area. I have been working for some time as a hotshot driver using my car delivering legal documents, blue prints, flash drives, auto parts and whatever else will fit in my car. I am wanting to move up to larger freight and longer distances that pays better. I also have a Chevy Silverado that I use sometimes to make runs, but what I can take in the silverado does not usually pay much more than what I'm getting paid for legal docs etc. After I get the CDL I'm thinking about selling the Silverado to put towards getting a Dodge flatbed.

I want to get the CDL learners permit. I got a copy of the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook from my local DPS office. I'm wondering what parts exactly I would need to study to get prepared to take the written test for the learners permit.

After I have the learners permit I am thinking about using one of the services below to help me complete the driving test.

both of these guys are in my area. Also does anyone know anything about any of these services.

Also what are you guys thoughts on the Dodge 3500 flatbed? I am going with a dodge from the advice of a good friend of mine who is a diesel mechanic. He said his most of his clients are ford and chevy owners.

Good move on wanting to get your CDL...its awesome that you have already built a client-el, that part is now out of the way and you know how the business works, which is probably the hardest part. Assuming you are pulling a trailer with your future Dodge pickup, you will need to know the combination vehicle test section, as well as general knowledge of CMVs. The air brakes part you will not need with your intended vehicle, but I would recommend getting it, as it may be useful in the future and you wont have that restriction on your license. As far as endorsements, since they dont require road tests, I would take at least tank, doubles, and hazmat. You may not need them right away, but perhaps in the future if a good paying gig comes up, you might be wishing you had them.

As far as using one of those companies for truck usage on the test, go for it! I used someone just like that out where I live and it was nice to get the CDL without big money for schooling.

Best of luck to ya, sounds like you are heading in the right direction!

    vureo Thanks this.
