Getting My Own Authority

I filed my own authority many years ago. It isn't that difficult as long as you can read and follow directions. OOIDA is a good resource and they can also help with the filing for a fee. I tend to do most things myself, such as incorporating my businesses, etc.,

I find it interesting that you complain about paying 12% to a carrier to find loads for you, pay liability and do all the paperwork and compliance for you. Whether a carrier gets loads from brokers or direct, the concern should be whether you are making a decent living and getting good rates. You may or may not do better running your own authority. I have known some who actually make less with their authority and wound up going back to leasing to another carrier. Most carriers take 25% or more to lease to them.

When you run your authority you will need to find your own loads, do the billing and all the other paperwork and compliance that your carrier now does for you. Not trying to discourage you, but there is more to running your authority than filing. I prefer running my authority, as to many others. But, you need to understand that you are taking on more responsibility and costs than when you lease to someone. It will be your responsibility to stay on top of your receivables and if you break down, you are on your own. Some carriers offer fuel and tire discounts. That will also no longer be available.

If you want to proceed then you need to check around for insurance rates and go online and take a look at the form for getting your authority. I would suggest that you take a good look at all costs and compare that to what you are making now. As I stated earlier, you may or may not make more than now. You will need to be a good negotiator.
