Getting off of disability and K restriction and getting driving.

I have not read this whole thread, but OP has displayed he/she is disabled in many ways. Im hope he never drives any vehicle on any streets anywhere. He/she is a timebomb.

 

He said he would drive near you, but in all seriousness, I know a few drivers who had one bad eye or were unable drive at night and drove fine for years

Compared to how much SS gives it will be more then they used to getting.

 

That is why you need to RESEARCH. Get on forums that are related to the subject. See what all is being said. Don't get mad at anyone here because we are being honest and open with you. You need to have a thick skin to be a driver. If you are getting a class B, what are you planning on driving? You can't get frustrated with us for giving you the truth when you didn't do the initial research in the first place

 

I did do a ton of research... I'm just not the brightest bulb in the barrel it seems. My original intention was to drive a semi. But then the K restriction happened. And then the class B happened because I ran out of time (I didn't have a babysitter for my child). Luckily, they let me come back to get the A for no extra charge.

Let me explain this to you, so it will be clear.

NO trucking school is under any obligation to tell you the truth.

There is no law against it, and if you think they can get sued for fraud or misrepresentation, it won't; they are protected by not having to force you to disclose your background when making that statement.

I would say 80% of potential students are not qualified to drive, most have piss poor driving records.

I think this is one thing that we need to have changed in this industry, schools should follow specific rules to make sure that the student can actually find work or be on the hook to return all the money.

I am ordering more of them, only a few like Autos in my fleet.

You won't be allowed to drive a bus, more likely a refuse truck.

I've talked to some veteran truckers, and they follow what goes on in the industry. They essentially told me that manual would be an endorsement in a few years, as opposed to a restriction. Automatics are more cost-efficient and have less of a learning curve. Where the big companies go, the small ones eventually follow.

I already did. Took my S and P exams, then talked to two schools. They both lied about why they couldn't hire me. So now I'm trying to figure out how to get trained just to have the endorsement, and so that I won't have invested time and money for nothing.

 

Well, unless they deal with fleets, I doubt they are speaking out of experience.

Where do you get they are more cost effective, not always.

No, you're not in the same boat as a teenager. A teenager hasn't had the opportunity to create a work history whereas you've had a decade on disability. If there is another candidate with similar skills and a solid work history they will get the job over you with no work history and a bunch of red flags.

 

No, I haven't had the opportunity. I've spent years - with the grace of God - getting myself to the point where I can do these normal things and live a normal life. If I had tried to work before, they'd have fired me pretty quickly. I've had to really work on myself, and even then people still say I'm slow and stupid. Outside of my disability, I have no red flags - no drugs, no criminal history, and no car accidents.

I applied for a school bus job with zero competition, and was rejected for my vision (even though I passed the DOT and have a vision waiver from the state). I suspect they made it up as an excuse, because they didn't want to hire someone on disability.

 

You're right, they don't want to hire someone on disability.

Autism, anxiety, and major depression don't mix well with jobs that require supervisory interaction while performing a separate skill based task. When the applicant has ZERO job history the company has no idea if the applicant has the ability to show up on time and work diligently until the job is complete. A + B = High Risk. What happens if you have a melt down and can't complete the route? What happens if one of the Sentient Emissions starts bullying you and you 'react poorly'. These are the things they're worried about - having to spend time and money to fix your issues.

Now toss is C - the high likelihood of not being allowed to fire you for cause/you suing for wrongful termination under the ADA. Even if the company has ALL THE EVIDENCE, it's still going to cost them time and money to fire you. Thus it's easier and safer to not hire you until you have some job history as an indication of your ability to handle the stress and working conditions.
