I'm enrolled in Mid-Florida Tech starting April 11th, anticipating a graduation date in early June. What is the process for finding pre-hire interest? Do I send companies I'm interested in a cover letter? Fill out online applications? After I have my CDL I will be returning to the Atlanta area (home). Does anyone have any suggestions for any "under the radar" companies that hire new CDL's in metro Atlanta? Thanks!

You can apply at any time and get some feedback from companies, which may be in the form of a pre hire letter, which means nothing. (just means you look good on paper). Then there will be recruiters at the school talking up their companies.

    Sportpilot,

You really will not need a cover letter. Go to the website of a company that interests you and fill out an application. Sometimes they have links for students/recent graduates on their website. The applications also sometimes have a place to check that you are a student/recent graduate. Either way, a recruiter will be in contact with you after they review your application. You can explain your schooling situation then. If you have not herd from them, do not be afraid to call them. Just say that you want to check on the status of your application. Also, you can call the 800 number and speak with a recruiter before filling out an application if you would like. Just fill the application out to the best of your ability. There will be places for information that you will leave blank such as owner/operator or previous company driver. They pretty much explain them self. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask. Good luck!

I would look into Roehl, they have a terminal in Ellenwood, where you could park on home time, because I'm sure its hard to find a place to park a tractor trailer in the metro area.

Hi Q...thanks for the reply. Tired of living on the Left Coast? Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I have heard of Mills...see 'em all the time. Good Luck to you, too.

Chinatown...seen the new Oz movie yet? Great Chinatown sequence in the film. Anyway, I've read newbies aren't too welcome in the tanker division. It is preferred to apply only after two years of experience...tankers requiring more subtle maneuvering. Have you driven tanker? Know people who have? Any newbies going into that division? Thanks for the heads-up on that. Now I have more research....Tanker Division...
