I'm sorry for this and not telling you what you should or should not do and I understand your reasoning but carrying any spring loaded knife such as a switch blade no matter how short it is, is illegal. Not showing off the knife mean's no one would ever know? Well, you just told any and everyone here you carry a weapon and this being the modern day of internet and all, if someone REALLY wanted to and is a psycho path or on drug's or something and having computer hacking skill's could find out where you live and case you out? To me, that was a bit of a stupid move.
    No pun intended.

As for calling the police. The hell with that because only in america will Domino's arrive before the police will! Sad part is, that's all truth there.

My first time to Neely's in Chicago at 3am, a man jumped on my truck a couple blocks away from the customer. He offered directions in. I told him I didn't need any pointing at my GPS. Well he wouldn't get off my truck so I gave him a ride. :)
We get there and he's waving like an idiot while I back into the closed dock. He then told me I owed him $80... $40 in, $40 out. I told him he was crazy. After a lengthy conversation he finally left. I normally keep my wallet on the dash as it helps me keep track of it. No see, I start looking.
Well this guy left and I then noticed the wallet wasn't there. ##$&%. I had about $400.
I looked all around the inside of the truck, no where to be found. I called 911. It wasn't 2 minutes and two cops pulled up. I got out and told them what happened and one cop took off looking. I then turned to get in the truck and there was the wallet laying under the seat. :) I forgot I hid it when I exited. Boy was I embarrassed. Police response is great in Chicago.
I haven't been in a fight in 15 years, but I never lost one when I was younger. I'd probably go on the self defense with a knife. A gun, he can have it. Bullets are too quick.

Another story, some of you might of ran into them 3 card shuffle hustlers that frequent truck stops. I run into them the 1st time in the 90's and seen them a couple times since. The last time I seen them, they got me for $50 as the background hustlers convinced me to take the wrong card. After I figured it out, I grabbed the money man by the collar with intentions of kicking his ###. Two others pulled me off him while he made his escape and they all disappeared in the crowd.
Funny how things work, I was sleeping in OH at a small truck stop last year. I hear stuff going on outside my truck as I slept. One dude knocks on my door and says come out here, did you see this, blah blah blah. I told him to get lost. I woke up then and looked out. I'll be... it was the same guys from 10 years earlier. They were hustling another driver. I played it a little smarter this time. I called the police. Then I took pictures of them as they hustled that guy :) One come over to my truck trying to distract me. They all got nervous and disappeared around the front of the store. I waited by the road and as they drove by I took more pictures of their license plates. They traveled in 4 cars. The police came and said they been trying to catch them guys. I loaded the pics on my laptop and then a disc and gave it to the cops. Hopefully I put a end to them scumbags. I seen them in TN and OH before. They had OH plates. There's six of them that work together. If you play, stick to your guns. Don't let the so called drivers talk you into another card. ;)

I feel safe in truck stops. Too many roaming eyes.

i parked in dallas one early morning. sleeping while waiting for my next load to come. i feel the truck shake a little and in texas thats usually typical from the wind...as i thought. i start hearing people shouting outside 'i'll give you 20 for the cb!' then someone in car pulls up and speeds off. i had got my clothes on and jumped out with a mini sledge hammer. they were gone in under a minute. the driver next to me just got robbed, they broke out his dog window and got in his pete. he bought the cb back..crack heads. funny thing was he had cash back in the sleeper area somewhere they didn't even bother to look through it. he said they were looking in my truck as he came out of the chrome shop. so..yeah,don't park at the chrome shop in dallas. you've been warned. :)

I know I'm coming into this one a little late, but I do have a plan in case someone tries to rob me or hijack my truck. I have an alarm system, panic button and dog. So, I would turn off the truck, tell them to let me get my dog, push the panic button, collect the dog and be halfway across the parking lot before they realize they can't start the truck without the alarm code. When they ask for it, give the wrong code. After the third try, the city horn will continue to honk and the ignition will be locked out. Meanwhile, I'm already inside the truck stop yelling about it and on the phone to the local cops giving a description of the person/people involved, vehicles and license plates if I can get them.

My first priority is my own safety and that of my little four-legged buddy. They can tear the truck apart, take anything from inside it they want or try to get in the trailer...my life isn't worth it. But they won't be able to go anywhere with it.

I don't carry a pistol, although I have thought about it and believe 50-state concealed carry reciprocity should be the law of the land...we were only two votes short in the Senate last time it came up. It needs 60 votes to move forward.

On another note, I was approached at the T/A in Lafayette, LA by a guy asking me to step out of my truck to show him how to use a digital video camera because "Women are good at that stuff" My dog jumped over to see what was going on and he got down off my truck in a hot hurry. There had been several incidents already just within the past three hours, so I told him to go pound sand and left. As I was pulling onto the freeway, I heard over the radio that the same guy had just robbed somebody.

I'm just a little broad...there's not much I'll be able to do if someone sets their mind on robbing me. And there's nothing on this Earth short of my kids worth dying for.

They just arrested a guy about 20 miles away in a small town near me for
    murder.

Apparently he was around Houston somewhere and decided to rob a driver
as he was parking his rig. The driver handed over his wallet like the robber
wanted. Robber must have had no heart or sense cause after the driver
handed over the wallet the thief decided to shoot the poor feller.

The caught him cause the dumb son-a-beech bragged to his cousin that he
had robbed a driver in TX and still shoot the guy after handing over his wallet.

There are certain circumstances under which there is no right answer. I only know what I would do. As I said, there's really not much a little broad like me can do.

Thus far, the worst that's ever happened in a t/s was when I took the dog out for a walk and went between my trailer and the one next to me. My dog, who never turns a hair at anyone, turned around and went behind me and started growling. Basenji's sound like bears when they growl and mean it. I turned around and found this big dude backing away from my dog and asking me to please not let him bite. Looked at my dog and he was baring his teeth at the guy. I've never seen him do that before or since. Guy was probably up to no good. This was at the Petro in N Little Rock. Needless to say, I avoid parking on that dark back corner any more.

The supreme court has ruled that the police have no obligation to protect you. They investigate crimes AFTER they happen.
