First off I don't know why you guys are all asking what crime he was committed. And second of all truck driving jobs are a dime a dozen. The only thing I can possibly think of that could potentially hinder your opportunities would be HazMat endorsement, which I wouldn't recommend personally anyways because majority of these carriers refuse to pay out more for HazMat for the added headache and such. Best advice though man just shop around, don't let some of these folks on here discourage you. It's a pretty interesting job, pays fairly well and for the most part stress-free

Thank you guys for the reinsurance, I appreciate it!
Looks like next step is to start searching for a trucking school that’s right for me, I’m in LA. What school do you guys recommend? Also being on probation shouldn’t stop me from getting into a trucking school right?

I suppose that depends on your PO. If he or she says it's ok to leave your county and go to trucking school and check in etc have at it.

To wit, there are many who do or did things in life and get branded a felon have no real difficulty getting a new start in trucking. In the old days the ones who refused to give up would unload trailers for cash. A group of trailers later they have done well and again tomorrow. In my time going to particular recievers that had good lumpers I would hire them several times on the delivery. I don't know if they ever advanced to driving because after those days the lumping situation changed drastically when third party companies began to take over a corner of the office at warehouses and cold storages.

If you're po has a issue with it then he's a pos. He is there to act as a mentor and assist you in staying out of trouble. Plus a good amount of "felons" are convicted of non violent crimes. Unfortunately a good friend of mine is a registered sex offender bc 12 years ago he was a Month or two over 18, he got his 17 year old girlfriend pregnant a month or two shy of her 18 birthday. They we're only a few months apart. Her parents where wealthy and hired a leach (attorney). Them two just celebrated their 11th anniversary together and have 3 kids. She hasn't spoken to her parents in almost 11 years. Not saying that is your case, just using him as an example. He struggled to find a job, luckily a good employer hired him 8 years ago

Being on probation won't stop you from attending cdl school.
Shop around for the cheapest 160 hr. school.
The state might pay for it through the WIOA Program. Check that on Google: WIOA Program California

Sex offenders or people on the sex offender register can be truckers. Of course, their choices are more limited, but still, plenty of companies will hire them.

There are no one size fits all answers to this. Just yesterday in another thread I was reporting a conversation I had with a friend of mine that works at Covenant. They send a driver home because of a robbery charge involving terroristic threats. They have customers that flatly REFUSE to have someone with these charges on their property. With a criminal record your choices of jobs is more dependent on 3 aspects of that charge. 1 It's age. 2 The actual crime and 3 your current status in regard to the sentence. As has already been said ad nauseam in these board, a record is NOT an automatic bar to a driving job. However "depending" it can greatly effect your choices. I have heard that as many as 25% of all truckers have a criminal record. If this is true it is 1 driver in 4. Think about that!

The actual "getting a CDL" is not going to be an issue because it is 100% MVR dependent. Paying for the school etc etc refer to the above.

I do wish you luck! If I can be of help please let me know!

Try this one that hire students in California:
Prime Inc. - school in Salt Lake City, Utah
Driver Training Program - Prime, Inc.
    https://www.primeinc.com/drive-for-prime/driver-training-program
Before heading to orientation for the Prime Training Program, you will need to obtain your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). Our training program will help you earn your Class A CDL, but first, you will need to obtain your permit on your own in your home state.
