I'm a former driver and I now work in operations for a small trucking company. It is rarely worth it to work over a holiday. You're better off asking to go home and spend the time with family and friends.

I'm at my 1st stop in Dallas /Ft Worth at this very moment. Picked up in Detroit Saturday 1am and drove the weekend away.
After I leave this stop I'll go stage at my 2nd stop 4am Monday appointment..then 2 more after that...

Worthwhile? ..well, I'll be back in Detroit Wednesday and if I haul a few intrastate milk loads my check is around $1,600 for a weeks work.

I pull a refer hauling meat exclusively for a packing plant in Detroit. I average 3,300 miles a week...

So how many years do I need to get a job like that?

Or at least some type of job where my company won't leave with without work to sit at a truck stop a whole holdiday weekend?

    Holidays.... what's that lol? :p

I've spent most of my Career working on holidays either involuntarily (low on the Senior board) or voluntarily (got paid doubletime or triple time to come in). It doesn't help that I've worked in the Food Industry and now the Parcel Industry, because everybody needs to eat and everybody nowadays orders online. If you do have to work on the holidays, get yourself an hourly job, so at least you're getting paid while stuck in traffic :)

I always liked and looked forward to holiday weekends.Didn't have to rush and I could actually visit with other drivers.OP take this extra time and clean your trk inside and out and maybe laundry.Only day its mandatory for many companies to let drivers go home is Christmas.

Do the research and buy your own truck, then at least you'll know why you weren't home if you don't make it. My kids are gone and I don't really care what holidays I work, what I do care about, is getting home to perform the required work on my truck.

Lol, well I only had 2 months experience and was hired..Given a factory fresh Volvo loaded with a Cummins 500hp, 13 speed and governed at 71mph.
    Absolutely no micromanagement..zero!
You will be treated like an adult and expected to do your job with no hand holding.

If you live within our shipping areas and aren't a lazy slug I can get you in a truck as quick as you can get to Detroit...Orientation is about 15 minutes.

I have been here over three months and absolutely love my job..70+k a year job for me a noobie!!

I also stay out for long periods..last stint 9 weeks..mostly because I live in Florida and don't get there often enough. Or when I do it's not close enough to my home..

Mostly we run Detroit to Dallas and Denver and get back hauls out of Kansas.

As far as benefits go..there are none...1099 or W2
    up to the driver.

I love rolling holidays, wide open truck stops anytime of night.
