Rental cost and fuel combined would come close to the cost of a flight. I can get to orientation, I'm just trying not to gamble too much cash upfront not knowing if it's going to work out. Schneider did me dirty recently and I was glad I took my personal vehicle and had very little invested in the trip.

Orientation is an extended interview. If I and/or the company fail that interview, I don't want to be out hundreds of dollars for getting there and then be stuck trying to get home. I'm leaning now towards just telling any company that wants me to travel that far that they can either buy a flight themselves or I'll drive myself there and back, then fly myself back to get the truck if everything works out.

Just drive your car to orientation. If they don't let you drive home and fly back (or better, to a local terminal) that alone tells you all you need to know about the company and if you want to work there.
Look at it as a litmus test.

That's what I did for my last distant carrier exit....to get back home.

I beat the car rental crowd at their own game.....:p

Rental cost and fuel come close to the cost of a flight. And that's not counting the cost to get home if it doesn't work out.

In that case--you need a friend and/or relative who can drive your personal vehicle back home, after you both get to your orientation destination.

I appreciate the advice. If the next company I go with doesn't have orientation within commuting distance of my house, I'm just going to tell them that they can pay for a flight themselves or I'll drive my own vehicle to and from orientation. Like @ZVar said, this is a good litmus test. I'm not going to risk losing hundreds of dollars just to get stranded 500 miles from home, and then have to spend the same amount or more to get back, if they're not even willing to cover the cost of a one-way flight. If that's not acceptable to them, I guess I don't want to work there.

Well with the friend/family was thinking they stay with you until you know you're good, that way you're not left high and dry on getting home. Most companies I think would at least reimburse for gas to get there if you drive yourself. Southern Mississippi is not great for airports lol

A company that wants you to pay up front for your transportation to orientation is a red flag.
A company that wants you to share a hotel room with a stranger... deal breaker!
