I go in the burbs with an OTR truck and 53ft’er often. They don’t enforce it unless you do something that grabs their attention or you’re being a jerk. Many times I’ve double parked and had them walk up to me. I respectfully tell them I’m at the customer and don’t have much of a choice but I’m willing to wiggle around to make it easier for traffic to get thru. If they give me a ticket I take and sign it and give it to my company. Also I should mention when going in NYC ya’ll need to have those tandems on the first hole and mind the swing on tight turns.

3x a week at my Rockefeller center stop we'd get a parking ticket every time. Cost of doing business.

My dad had a pickup in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont. He called for directions. "You come through town and then turn left at the stump". He scratched his head, drove through town and saw it. "Oh, that stump!"God prefers Diesels, D.Tibbitt, Siinman and 3 others Thank this.

I believe that within a certain distance from STAA highways, they have no choice. Lower Manhatten is beyond that, so they can enforce it.Last edited: Aug 4, 2022
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
From the code of regulations for STAA, Title 23 Pt. 658. (d) No State may enact or enforce any law denying access within 1 road-mile from the National Network using the most reasonable and practicable route available except for specific safety reasons on individual routes.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Only allowance is Long Island and the Interstate system.
Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island prohibits 53 feet trailers via municipal bylaw.
They are part of 5 different counties.
You can get away with a local delivery if you don't stray away more than 1 mile from the Interstate system.
NYC was my playground with a 48 footer from July 2001 to July 2003.
And with a 53 footer from July 2004 to January 2007.
I promised the police officer that I won't come back ever with an illegal length and I kept my word.
Your mileage may vary.
And everyone should make their own assessments and make their own decisions about what they want to do. -
I used to run out of the Navy yard, and we had a 53' for bulky loads. I preferred the 45' 12'6" so I could take the tunnels. Pre 9/11. From 2006-2009, I had to go to a place by the airport. I took Linden from Prospect Expressway. For a guy from Southern California, I sure drove a truck like a New Yorker!bzinger, Vampire and Another Canadian driver Thank this.
