Wednesday I picked up a glass load for Utica, OH which is 25 miles from home. I couldn't leave until early Thursday so I drove all day to get to the plant then had to wait for the guy to unload. I didn't think about the time until too late and when I pulled out I had 9 minutes of my 14 left. Had to spend the night there and drove over to my church the next morning where my wife picked me up. The trip over was a little exciting. I had an impatient driver pass me on 62 when I had just gotten up to 55 mph. (I guess that wasn't good enough.) No sooner had he gotten all the way back into the lane in front of me than 3 deer ran across in front of him - he caught the middle one and it went spinning across the road. I wanted to honk a thanks when I passed him pulling over but thought that wouldn't go over too well. Had a great weekend at home then Monday morning I got a deadhead to Mt Zion. I gave an ETA of 1900 forgetting the time difference and got there at 1730 local. Ended up waiting almost 5 hours to get loaded. The glass was going to Madison, GA. I drove to about 70 miles north of Atlanta and will get up very early to beat the traffic and make an early arrival at the consignee (who had already said I can deliver early.) Good start overall. God Bless

Hello seawheeler and others who are contributing to and following this excellent thread. This is my first post on the forum. I have spent countless hours over the last couple of weeks reading posts here and am grateful to have found this tremendous source of knowledge and inspiration. Thanks to all who have put in the effort to document their experiences. I just got my CDL yesterday after attending a 6-week community college trucking school and have been looking at trucking companies for about 3 weeks. Although I applied to more than a dozen so far, I seem to be more excited about flatbed. I am now in the pre-hire phase with Roehl flatbed division and my application has been approved with Maverick glass division. Both seem to be good companies, though what I read about Maverick has me slightly more interested at this point. Thanks again for all the great info and I hope to be contributing more as I move forward with this new endeavor.

Welcome to the forum. You got the fist big hurtle out of the way by getting your CDL, congratulations. There are many good companies out there, Maverick being one of them of course. Your choses will be limited being new but that help narrow down the field. If you have any questions I'll try to answer them as truthfully as passable.

Pulled in to get fuel and sleep for the night at a Pilot here in BF KS, wouldn't ya know it's full and people are making spaces everywhere. I do a lap just to check it out and then I here on the radio "Maverick, need a spot" ah, ya, ah, Maverick here, you talking to me? "Ya Maverick, I'm leaving in about an hour, sit tight and I'll give you my spot" ya buddy! It was an O/O pulling a flat. So there you go, Maverick gettin' a little respect out here! Shows ya there are still some nice guys driving and not all of them for Maverick. Amen

Roehl has a lot of handholding, take this route, fuel here, etc. the equipment is not as good as Mavericks but it's okay. The pay over there is a lot less than that maverick. But they have other perks.
My son went to work over there because he was not old enough to work for maverick. He will switch to maverick when he is 23.

I don't know a lot about the glass division so I can't comment on it.
I do believe maverick would be a better choice between the two but I wish you the best of luck with whoever you choose.

Loaded glass at PPG Wichita Falls TX yesterday. Going to Elkhart, IN so I'll get a night at the house, thats a pleasant surprise. The glass plant was rockin'. I guess they are back up and running 100% after the holiday slow down.
