If your looking to spend a ton of money why not get an old truck made before EPA regulations and fix it up nice. Depending on what it needs. Does this not make sense?
Well that's my 2 cents. Because I don't have loads of cash to throw to the wind. Which is what happens when you buy a new truck or glider and it loses near 20% value as it drives off the dealer lot.

Glider is clearly the way to go even if it costs you the same as a new truck.Way more reliable, elog exempt, etc

Until that bull gear needs to be replaced. 1 - 1.5 mpg better than CAT is not a deal breaker for me. And I prefer the reliability of million mile motors.

1.4 million in my Columbia and my W9 has over 2.2 million. Can Detroit do that?

No offense,.. I do like the Detroit 12.7. But it does not have the torq and power compared to a CAT. 2 very different animals.

I'm tired of hearing about fitzgerald.I ran one for a year and a half and only problem was a bad jake solenoid. They said to replace it and they paid for it.

No offense taken.I love the detroit my 96 western star had close to a million when I traded her in back then a inframe cost 6000 at penn detroit vs 11,000 for a cat.So even if you could get more miles on engine you are still behind considering the mpg difference. My western star got 7.2 and my 379 550 cat got 5.5 both pulling a tanker.Pittsbugh power can get a detroit running around 700 horse so how much power do you need?Biggest mistake I made was trading in the ws on the pete.Truck had 620,000 miles and needed a rebuild.Imo cats are way overrated!

A 12.7 absolutely will give you the same longevity of a cat. Perhaps even longer.
As for torque and power, built right it will give you every bit that you could ever ask for. Not quite as much as a performance built cat... But in all practical terms unless you are running 100k lb loads you won't be able to tell the difference.

Nothing wrong with a cat, but that 12.7 is no slouch either.

Carrier I lease to has a couple 2012 Gliders with the 12.7. 500hp 13 spds. Borrowed one a few yrs back while mine was in the shop.

The first thing I noticed was the delay when putting your foot down. Especially from a stop. Not sure if it was the tuning,. or what. But that got on my nerves.

The other was the lack of power. My Columbia was only 435hp at the time,.. and would walk the 500hp glider on every hill. Columbia is at 500hp now and W9 put 516hp on the engine dyno,.. so whats that,.. 550?

Back to my Carrier. He also has a 2015 Coronado HD pulling an RGN that has the DD16 in it. 600hp and that thing will walk my CAT with out even breaking a sweat. That said,.. averaged 4.2 mpg in it.

Nothing against grey paint. Just prefer the yellow paint.

Why did the truck need a rebuild at 620k miles? A well maintained detroit shouldn't need opened up for at least 1.2 to 1.5 million.
