Just outta curiousity, how do you convert an ISX (Cummins) into a 6NZ (Cat) ? Sounds like a trick I'd like to know more about. I'll hang up and wait for your reply. :biggrin_2559:

You didnt say you had 2 or 3 trucks. Thats a very specific number. Most o/o's have one truck (you dont qualify for fleet if you are a single truck owner). Most small fleets have more than 3. For me to know that you are in that small minority of owners who have 2 or 3 trucks AND already have all three trucks registered with CARB.... WHATS THAT???? You have to ALREADY have EACH TRUCK YOU OWN registered with CARB? YEAH. So how do you propose that these guys who are asking if they should go buy a truck now get registered with CARB? As you obviously know, you MUST HAVE YOUR COMPLETE FLEET REGISTERED BY VIN ON JANUARY 15, 2013.....

BigJls1, the OP was a question about "should I buy a new glider"? My answer was NO, you are not exempt from CARB if you didnt register THAT SPECIFIC truck with
them BEFORE January 15, 2013. Bigj, congrats on paying attention and knowing that your truck is good for nine more months but does that change the answer I gave? Was I wrong? Is a 1996 to 2004 legal right now for a guy with 2 or 3 trucks? NO, not even with the exemption.

I could have saved a ton of money on Lawyers if I had just asked a truck driver.

Copy. I have helped in the digression of the OP's thread and I'm sorry. Guntoter you are correct he asked for opinion on gliders and we got on some rant about CA.

So MY opinion on A glider is with-out a doubt yes. I own a glider and am Based in AZ and have ZERO issues with income not running in CA. Thats why I stated I have already stopped CA freight unless it really paid well. so 9 months from now It really wont be a shocker to never enter. I really think warehouses are going to post up at the CA borders for this very reason. Which is what they do at the ports to drive in clean air trucks.

If the OP is not based in CA and has no CA customers why would he worry? if hes leasing on to a larger fleet that has freight there then a glider will not be best option.

    Guntoter Thanks this.

I dont know about the warehouses at the border, there are too many Swift trucks waiting to go. Maybe when the economy is better shippers could justify the extra costs. For now they cant go wrong having supermegafleets shipping into California for $1.25 a mile. I have always wondered why the guys who build Ryder and Lowes trucks built that facility in Ehrenberg. Maybe they knew something 15 years ago.

My point about ports was because if he is (or someday could be) a flatbed operation, he needs to think about the fact that several port authorities and some cities are considering adopting California's smog laws. If he runs reefer he could be in trouble in Hunts Point by January 1, 2015.

For single truck o/o companies, keeping a truck 3 or 4 years is a good way to go broke. Im just trying to help people see that 5 years from now this country will look very different from a truck owners point of view.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I have no clue as to what I will do but it is refreshing to hear others opinions on the matter. I love the gliders of course, mainly because I can go old school, which I admit is part of the appeal. I did find a brand spanking new Coronado (2 to be precise) which is not a glider, so I would have old school look, somewhat aero efficiency but would have new emissions engine. However I would be compliant to run anywhere. So again, I have time to decide and see how things play out. Again, thanks!

I think he thought you kept the ISX in the truck and converted it to 6NZ. Obviously you put a Cat block in the truck and had to convert the truck to Cat. Right? Or did you paint your Cummins yellow?

Honestly that came out like a bit of a smartassed remark, but I just sold a 379 that I wanted to do the same thing to. Two shops I spoke with said that the wiring on the firewall was a nightmare to switch out from an ISX to a 6NZ so I sold it instead.
