Never heard of anyone getting their truck impounded. Have a friend who works for Blue Ribbon Dist. here in Phx, they have 19 trucks ranging from new to the oldest is a '97. They got fined once for $1K, that's the only first hand knowledge I have of anyone ever getting fined.
I think I might have seen CARB one time at the rest area on the Eastbound 10 in Calimesa, but I was in the hammer lane with my foot on the floor getting a run up the hill-so I didn't stop.

Normally I am like you; a risk taker. I think being an O/OP attracts people like us. But it is simple math on getting caught. Just because you or I don't know of anyone getting their equipment impounded doesnt mean they haven't. Spend time on the CARB website and see just what the penalty is. They have been slow to implement these new laws, but now there is no mercy. I make the most $$ hauling from here out, so the DPF will pay its own way. If my situation changes, I can always take it off and sell it to someone who needs it. Banning has always been a problem for O/OPs getting CHP inspections and so that is where you will likely meet the CARB folks.

Well, if the fine is a thousand bucks, I personally would wait til I got the first one.

I was at a shop in California getting some front brakes put on. They had a county owned dump truck in the shop also. The shop had installed a dpf on that older truck. The problem : that dump truck wouldn't run.

Good luck. Maybe some people aren't having problems.

My install will be one year old in April. No issues at all mechanically except for the pyro running just a hair warmer due to some back pressure but I guess it's normal, I have been running 7" straights which had zero back pressure, now with the install, I have some and still running straights. I have modified file in the ECM, (1LW series 550 Brakesaver, with 58's injectors and better fls/fts numbers). In all, the pyro "post" won't go over 900. Still averaging 7.0 and sometimes low as 6.5 on the heavier haul loads. I had the R-50 install which covers for bigger horsepower, 600+ easily, but more expensive. Like they say, "Horsepower cost money". The R-40 will handle up to 475 HP, but my installer said he has had them install on stock 550's. I can only speak for Cat engines, but I have seen them alot on Detroit's, and the few I have spoke with, told me t no issues either. The key is keep your eyes on the gauges on a hard pull.

    Thanks again Dave;
I just wonder why you and I seem to be the only O/OPs interested in keeping out of trouble with the CARB police? There should be dozens of us on here like you who have put on the DPF. There is nothing I hate more than unreasonable Calif. regulations, but its the DPF or big problems for me. I was hoping someone would post here that has put one in place of the stack mufflers, but almost no one has even commented on here except you.
I would be really worried about doing this if you hadn't shared your experience with your DPF install. THANKS
How much more did it cost to go with the bigger DPF over the normal size?

    Dominick253 Thanks this.

Very interested to follow your progress, particularly with the 12.7. I didn't want to be the guinea pig -- especially since I didn't qualify for a grant.

I will be on here as soon as it gets installed! I am trying to use the same company that did Dave's. I have no grant $$ either. This could bankrupt me if the truck doesn't run right after its on, I could be out of business. I just don't have the resources to spend over $15K on the DPF and then weather a storm of problems. The 12.7 should be easier than a bigger CAT due to less exhaust and simple platform. At least I hope so.

    Terry270 and Dominick253 Thank this.

Like you said before @areelius, it's a numbers game, and I've always been pretty lucky. So I'm going to play the numbers game until I get caught, along with the thousands of other trucks I see rolling around LA on my weekly trip.
I think I would like to talk to an atty. to see if they can really impound the truck as hundreds of others are driving by that are non-compliant.

    Terry270 and Dominick253 Thank this.

I dont blame you for taking that risk. Please let me know what the lawyer says. If there is a way to avoid this new world we must live in, I will. I just know how much power the state has over the people and there is a time to concede if that makes life easier. Many of the trucks you see that appear non-compliant are part of small fleets. They can have 1 non compliant if they have 2 compliant. So there will always be smoking trucks on the road. Whether they "can" impound is not really the question. Whether they"will" is. The bureaucrats don't have to worry about the law as they see themselves above it. Just trying to get the truck back after they impound it will bankrupt us. Lets keep track of what happens to both of us on here.

    Bakerman and Dominick253 Thank this.

I couldn't find anything from them saying that they will impound a non-compliant vehicle.
