Reading about all of the trailer issues you've had makes me remember all those times I had to "go to this shop" or "go to this truck stop" looking for a tech that could make the needed repairs. It's a pain in the ### while it's gong on but let me tell ya, since I've been out of trucking since 2009 & am now itching to get back in, those are the things I remember the most about my time behind the wheel. Those repair hassles trying to get company maintenance to authorize a repair or getting stuck for a few days getting a new turbo installed in WV at a Detroit dealer.
Oh & my personal favorite adventure... losing an entire day to a drink warehouse in Fairfax, VA after switching with another driver at a rest area in Maryland who needed my empty trailer cause he was "out of hours & on a mandatory reset" yeah right he was!Turns out he was anxious to get out from under that load because he had driven carelessly somewhere & the whole load had shifted in the trailer. Half the pallets were titled or had broken through the shrink wrap.
I was righteously ticked off when he receiver didn't want to unload the trailer & I was being blamed for damaged product. After a rather tense few hours of on the phone discussions with the company not wanting me to take the load back to MN where it came from it was finally agreed to pay me the going lumper rate to hand unload all of the damaged pallets of drinks. I refused to do it for the company's measly $50.00 they paid a driver when the lumper fee to do it would have been $175.00 for a minimum charge of 3 hours. Nope I was a full fledged company man & wanted to do all I could but I drew a line there & held firm for what was right. I wasn't going to be slave labor for the company & the receiver when a lumper would have charged more.
I found out a few days later my FM raised a stir at the office with the other driver's FM & the folks in load planning. The driver was just trying to cover his tracks with the damaged load by switching off with me. He got his just desserts & was dismissed for a 'pattern of poor decisions' was the company line. I can't say that upset me to hear it. It was only a few weeks later my FM, the 1st one I had at that company was quitting to go into business for himself...
Boy did I miss him too. He really taught me the ropes of the company & kept me rolling.
Yep. Those days like that are what I miss the most. One would think a truck driver would love to forget that adventure. Odd wouldn't you say?
Be safe out there driver! -
Just finished our late 2 stop load on time heading back to Murray so I can go home and figure somethings out.
