He has a cdl, so has to list employment for the last 10 years.
When the company he applies with, contacts WX for job verification, the new company will be told, "He's under contract with us until his debt is paid off and if you hire him we will sue you."

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

How would that hold up in court? Is it written in the contract that he can't work anywhere else? Because if it isn't then it's a baseless threat trying to promote fear but would lose in court everytime

I don't know, but it's been tried before. I think after 7 years it's turned over to a collection agency.
I don't know because I've never been involved with that.

    Judge and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

This is what I would do. It's $900 dollars. Find out who you have to pay it to and get it done since you have the money. Then you can check out some companies Chinatown listed along with other ones that have training programs.
Thankfully you hung on to your CDL. I've done the same thing even though I haven't used it. I have no plans on letting it go.
Hopefully there hasn't been interest charged on that amount. If so fight that by offering to pay it all at once. I'd be contacting WE asap.

    Good luck

I don't know. CRST has been doing that for awhile now. When drivers quit before the contract is done, they will send letters to prospective employers threatening legal action if they hire that driver. They also won a lawsuit against Swift for "poaching " their drivers and were awarded 10 million. It's in appeal now.

I haven't applied anywhere yet but back in winter of 2015 I only had 1 company call me back after filling out 30 something drive apps. The 1 company that did try to hire me after interview and passing their road test/drug test said they couldn't hire me via contract issues.

I’d be willing to bet you could get hired without WX being called. I would not be giving them $900.

Any company or just driving jobs?

I’ve worked for a few that never made those calls. Of course, they are the ones that usually don’t pay much.

Try construction companies near you that have dump trucks.
