Was that not a valid question?...Seems to be logical that you would slow as much possible(or needed) before shifting...If not, I'm all eyes and willing to learn!

drop one gear still.....and use snub braking, NEVER downshift anymore when going down hill not too many guys can recover a shift while going down hill.Click to expand... -

If it's icy or snow covered, maybe 1 gear lower isn't prudent, maybe 2 if the right answer, no?...We're taught that also, should we ignore that since the test answer says only one?...Click to expand...Click to expand... -
I understand going slower down the hills.............and agree 100%.
But I still did not get my answer about how do you know what gear to use, if you are to drop one gear lower than climbing, if you did not climb the hill?
I am not trying to be an ***, I just wonder.
And since I run local, with no mountains................ -
I never heard this before.........very interesting.Xcis said: ↑Second, you determine the correct gear for your safe speed.
As a general guideline on a ten speed transmission, if your safe speed ends in a 5, like 25 mph, add the two digits together to determine the HIGHEST gear you should use. At 25 mph, 2 + 5 equals 7th gear which is the absolute highest gear you should consider using. 6th may be a better choice.Click to expand...
Do you use this technique?? -
I kinda see what you're saying but it's not really true.. I have not had a jake for over 7 years now and have easily dropped another gear even on the 11% grade on Pa 31 around the tunnel - did it last night with 40K behind me in two boxes.. Especially on snow and ice I have to keep my RPM's real low and it's second nature to drop a gear going down a steep grade..walstib said: ↑>>>>.NOTE: While you are descending the grade never attempt to downshift. You will be increasing speed and rpm's and will be unable to get into any gear thus descending in neutral
Why can't you hit the brakes before shifting?...We braked to 900rpms and doubled down pretty easily......Click to expand...
Where do you come up with this theory that I'll be unable to shift? I let it wind up since the roads were dry and was still more than able to drop one in the middle of the hill when I decided it was a good idea..
What do you mean when you say "why can't you hit the brakes before shifting"? What is doubling down? I guess dropping two gears but I only do that at stop lights.. Where are you getting this stuff??
