Think long and hard about this..like was said above OTR is a whole different deal than what you are doing now. But it is your decision... lots of luck whichever way you go. But remember when something looks or seems too good to be true....then it usually is.

    This.

Explore other options. Moving and finding something that will keep you happy might be a better option than sacrificing so much of your time doing OTR.

Stay put, unless you are forced to move away from a hub or get laid off.

Change companies within the LTL sector but do not leave LTL for OTR. Apply for linehaul and even "wild" linehaul positions at other LTLs. Be willing to move to a better hub with longer runs. I'd look at SLC, DEN, DFW, OMA, CHI. Call The terminal managers direct at Old Dominion Freight Lines, fill out online apps with ABF, SAIA, FedEx Freight.

You can also get on linehaul with Old Dominion real easy if you will do team and can get along with mosy anyone. You will make $110K to $120k a year and still get home every 7 to 10 days.

I went from Local to otr , can't imagine going back , personally its been good . The company you work for and equipment make a HUGE difference in how much you will enjoy it cause you really live it -whether you want to or not.

Also those crusty old truck drivers that need to be manscaped by a chainsaw and a team of asain ladies are infinite pools of wisdom on how to do the same job way easier so learn to look at them with respect , as a local guy I really thought they were a waste of air , but since I have been otr I have learned quite the opposite.

i did the OTR thing. all over the northeast. not anymore, and NEVER again. now i work for a local small company and the radius is 300 miles out, 300 miles back. 75% of the time it is a deadhead run back home. i love this gig. home 4 out of 5 nights a week, and the paycheck last week was about 15 bucks shy of 900 dollars. not too bad for about 55 hours of work.

As you can see there is a multitude of answers DEPENDING on who you ask--IMHO--the answer here is--Do what you feel is right for YOU! Nobody can really tell you HOW you feel--maybe the old make a list advice is the place to start here--do the pro and con thing and see how it adds up--but either way--remember--if you aren't happy--well you can fill in the rest.

I'll take Reno over Las Vegas any day. I lived there for 5 years. Forty five minutes to Lake Taho and some of the best snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing in the world. Four hours to San Francisco when you feel the need for a big city. And not nearly as many meth addicts and all around scum bags as in Vegas.
