Ironpony, I went to Central Tech in the fall of 2010, hadn't done much driving since, I applied on Monday and got heard from my recruiter that I was approved today.
I have a couple of questions, I have been in business management for the past 40 years, do you think with that background I could be successful in a lease? I really would rather do the lease as I really like the idea of working for myself, however I need to be on the side that would make me the most money. Also, the email she sent stated I would have to do a road test. How involved is the road test as I haven't been behind the wheel for a couple of years and I know I would be very rusty. Thanks for your answer. -
I'm sure IP is writing a long, thoughtful reply, but here's the Executive Summary:
Spend a year learning the business of trucking. Run the numbers as if you were leasing, and see where you end up.
If the numbers look good a year later, then lease.
TL/DR version: Drive company for a year, then ask again.

What MsJamie wrote. And I know exactly what you mean about working for yourself!
Your background will certainly put you well beyond the usual starting driver, but you need to get some trucking experience. The place to do that is on the company side. Pay down your personal debt, build up some cash to run your business with, and run a shawdow biz on your company loads to assure yourself it will work for you. You can come in any time to sign a lease, but once you've signed, you're stuck with it. What if you jump right into a lease, and then decide you can't stand trucking? Get some experience, and then decide...
If you haven't done so, read the lease thread:

Thanks for the information IP and MsJamie,,,,I thought that would be your answer and I appreciate your input. I will be in orientation the first of June, I have to go through the training as a newbie since it has been so long since I received my CDL. No problem though, after a year I won't owe anything for the training, and be a much safer driver to boot! Hope to meet you sometime!
