DUDE STAY AWAY FROM THIS SET UP.

Man so many warning bells went off from just a couple of the posts you made.

For one thing if May won't hire you outright this guy can't either. Insurance reasons.
As soon as they find out you are working for him with no experience in 8 yrs you'll be out on the street.

Put a dollar amount on your benifits and then add that to your hourly wage. You are probably making more than you think.

I would run screaming from this offer......run Forest, run.

    Why Run?
There are are big companies that screw folks over every day as a matter of course because to them you are just a math proplem
I myself if givin a choice would choose to work for the little guy every time if you find a good one they will treat you better than big co. x ever will
I have four hands and I treat them like family you will never get that from a big company
The last man to write me a paycheck is my friend and helped me get started with his old gig when he went on to other things I will make just under a milloin this year and it would never have been if I had stuck with my the big buck union job (that sucked) is there risk yes but not that much as it is easy to take a CDL and move on

not speaking of this May gig just my opin on the subject in general

All these guys have pretty well said it all,but I'll stick my two cents in anyway cause I'm a loudmouth and can't help it(it's my cross to drag.lol)

During times I didn't have my own truck,I ran setups just like you are describing and have done REAL good at it most times. The only time I've took a deep screwing was from a fairly big company and the rest of the time I've worked for 0/0s with one or two trucks. Here's how I judged things and kind of protected myself.

If you live in a area where everyone knows everyone else,go hang out a bit at the place where the old men hang out.If this dude is no count, trust me,the dead pecker society will be glad to rat him out and tell stories on him.

What is the truck he wants you to run? If it is a nice, well kept truck, your chances are a bit better he is going to pay.If it's a broke down old Volvo, run the other way as fast as you can because who cares if he would pay or not.LOL

If the deal goes looks good and you start working for him, make him stick to what he says to the letter (a lot of these guys if they sense weakness of any kind in you, they will start screwing your eyeballs out of your head) and if he gets one week behind on your pay,get out of the truck and walk away cause it ain't going to get better so don't let him get any deeper into your pockets cause chances are you are then donating labor free gratis.

What Brick said about insurance is right IF you were dealing your cards on top of the table, but, wrong in this situation. A guy that will pay cash and knows how to get around the paper work will easily know how to beat that tiny problem.A lot of you guys know exactly what I'm talking about.

The major benefits to working this way is a $100 dollar bill is a $100 bill, not $70 dollars as you pay taxes to support a bunch of deadbeats in D.C..Also,99% of the time you deal directly with the truck owner, not some douche sitting in an office whose never been in a truck but yet feels he can mouth off to you with impunity and screw your DAC up.In this situation,if the guy jerks you around to bad,you can stomp a mudhole in his ### and go elsewhere knowing the only DAC report he's gonna have is his cell phone which he won't use because he is dirty dealing too.

The MAJOR drawbacks are you have NO protection with your paycheck....no insurance, retirement and maybe not even workmans comp.If he's slick enough,I'll guarantee you won't have it.So the only thing you get out of a deal like this is what you get friday night when you get paid. You also have no protection with your paycheck. If he doesn't pay you,who are you going to cry to? The labor board?Small claims court?DOT? I doubt very seriously you'd want to open THAT can of worms and go down with the ship and he knows that too.

I'm not saying this is a good idea or a bad one and I'm not advocating that you go to work for him or you don't.Just telling you how it could go.GOOD LUCK with whatever you choose.

To Brickman, I don't know if May would hire me out right or not. All I know is a lot of other co. wouldn't without at least 3 to 6 months "recent OTR experience". I did talk to Swift and they said that because I still had my cdl and a current medical card that I could come in and do a pre-trip and a road test and then go from there. But because so many people on here said "don't work for Swift" I pretty much thought that would be my very last resort. As far as my 5 year driving history one ticket for going 65 in a 60 that was over a year ago and my only other one was failure to come to complete stop. So if that would disqualify me from May Trucking or not I honestly don't know. One thing for sure is that the money I would be making would be more than where I'm at now even with the benefits I have now. Oh and the language thing, He speaks Bosnian. Ya, with all of these comments I don't know what to do now. More confused than before. Thank you to everyone who cares enough to respond to my dilemma.

Here are a couple other things that I didn't mention about the situation with the O/O. He has me fill out a background check from May Trucking, OK I get that part. But He also has me fill out a whole application for May Trucking . He says that Ill go to orientation in about a week and then I hand in the application at that time. He says that Ill do a UA and go through all of their co. procedures at the 3 day orientation. Is that the way that most co. do things when an O/O has an employee running loads for them? It all most sound as if I'm a sub contractor for a sub contractor.

Before you waste your time filling out that app call the May recruiter on monday and ask them if they would hire you as a company driver with your situation. If they say no to hiring you as a company driver they will not allow the O/O to hire you either. You'll have saved yourself some time.

Reason for this is that you will still be on their insurance working for them as a co driver or as a driver for an O/O.
Nothing against this guy from Bosnia but I've seen many time where some folks especially those not as familiar with the way things are done in the USA think that they don't have to follow the way we do things. I'm sure he is thinking that he'll just wing this past May and be on his way....... I will be very surprised if May would hire you either way...... but I could be wrong.

Due to some of the experiences I've had there are many many warning bells and red lights going off in my head on this one.

One last thing. I would not be driving on my own. I am supposed to be teamed up with some one with over 30 years experience. With any co. I would be going to work for, I assumed that I would be with a trainer or some one with more experience. At least for awhile. I really thought that this was going to be a good deal for me to get some experience and learn from a veteran. Maybe I am fooling myself on this one. I do appreciate every thing you said and the time you spent helping me.
