Per Diem for trucking purposes is an IRS deduction. In theory the IRS allows you $52 a day in per diem expense while you are away from home. Ostensibly, this covers lodging, food, and miscellaneous.
Trucking companies have kind of hijacked the IRS Per Diem option, by rolling the deduction YOU would get when filing your taxes into your weekly pay. Frequently, they quote CPM with the per diem rolled into it, with a small asterik and even smaller print. The Per Diem Option benefits the driver with a bit more take home pay. It benefits the trucking company with lower employer share of FICA, lower Worker Comp earnings, and lower UC earnings.
I am not an expert on the subject. But I am happy to hear Per Diem is an Option at Roehl, and not the basis for the advertised CPM.
Thanks to everyone for shedding some light on this matter

Got my pkg today with lodging info...whats with the NO TV included in the $400 apt?? Are they dives or what? Should I find alternate lodging like a hotel that at least includes TV, cable and houskeeping? Geez.

Im done! I passed my test and im going home tomorrow!! The three weeks went by fast. The test is easy, all you need to do is be safe, check constantly for traffic, and dont hit any curbs. See you on the road..

I would not sweat it too much. I start there on 8/6 and got lodging assignment to the apts that have no TV - as described in the info pkg. Dropped an email to the recruiter and was told that my apt 'may have' TV and microwave even though it says not. I was told that the best thing to do is contact the resident manager who is very good at getting things like that if a student wants them. Recruiter said the apts are first-rate......although that is always subjective.
Anyhow....not a big deal with me. I don't watch that much TV anymore and plan to bring along an old, small portable B/W I have in my shop - just to stay in touch with the news & local weather which is about all I use the TV for when at home. Plus, I can catch up on some books I have planning to get read for a while now....if time allows. It is probably good for me not to have the distraction of cable or satellite TV. I am planning to focus fully on the training and any addt'l required studying/reading each night. I guess you can call me an old fuddy-duddy or nerd! Now,.....the internet - that is something I will miss!!! -
I sent Rob an email but so far no reply. No matter though, found that all I needed to do was get a TV card for my laptop and now I can use this as my TV when done studying. And with this Sprint Aircard thing I get to stay in touch with the rest of the world, email, surf the net and generally not feel like I'm isolated too much. I start school on 8/13.

Does anyone know if Roehl reimburses for the travel to school? I should have asked my recruiter but forgot and after all his patience with me over the last couple of days, I hate to call him back today. Seems like I saw somewhere that they did at $0.15 per mile......or, it could have been another company during my exaustive research on trucking companies. Also, is the training/stay on bonus ($300) paid after school, after training completed or at a later date? I hate like he!! to have to start counting pennies and have financial stress on my mind right now when getting ready to start school. This car bill that went over a grand really hurt the new job training & plan. -
New guys... do tell. We all know that Roehl is in the midst of a big recruitment push, and doing well from what I can tell. How has it affected everyone's miles? Bottom line it; straight numbers for the last thirty days... month of July, whatever.
