I had a nice day today, except for the hours.
Getting up at 0045 to make a 0330 live unload, but I was the first one in so docking was easy.
And now I have a 2200 pick up, so I will have to run all night to set myself up for a 0500 delivery on the 4th in Golden, CO.
I really hate these hours, but hopefully I can get back to a day schedule before long.
Good Night From II

I think they saved those loads for newbies! My first load solo flatbed:
I had to deliver it in a residential neighborhood in San Francisco!MosquitoBandito and FerrissWheel Thank this. -
Look at it this way........you'll both learn together!
FerrissWheel Thanks this. -
Yep that's it! My load also had 2 pallets of smaller pipe fittings that they put on top of the load. I ran out of straps. Mine went to residential Oakland. All the other guys in my class got perfectly square lumber loads... Nobody got vinyltech loads which is probably a good thing.FerrissWheel Thanks this.

I was lucky in that Tom was the flatbed equipment manager when I went solo. I had extra straps which REALLY helped with many of the loads I hauled. Had my arthritic shoulder not started causing me problems I would have stayed with flatbed and moved on to an O/O company.FerrissWheel Thanks this.

What part of SF did you have to deliver those? I used to deliver building supplies there using straight trucks for Pacific Supply about 20 years ago. Most enjoyable job I ever had, although I had some pretty hairy deliveries with the hills. Its the reason why I am ditching my "respectable" corporate office job and getting back to trucking.

It was in the southern part of The City, not far from the 280. Worth part was they gave me the wrong address. I lucked out and saw some signs for a construction company replacing the sewer lines so I called them. Saved my newbie bacon!MosquitoBandito Thanks this.

I'm gonna meet up with a student in Gary. I'll give it a shot, could be fun. If all else fails, we get to scratch our heads in unison. Picking up a pipe load in Harvey IL of some kind going to Chino CA.
Apparently gotta be tarped, so we shall see. -
I delivered to SF a bunch of times and never had to deal with the hills. Delivered to HD supply on Toland st a bunch of times, and more clay pipes all over the city. I had a 3 stop clay pipe load that went all over, first stop was on the southern end of town, second was near market st/101, 3rd stop was by ucsf. Definitely a challenge with the long wheelbase tractors and spread axle 48 footers. On my way out of the city there was a step deck from another company with steal beams stuck on a right hand turn. It didn't look like he button hooked it at all.
I remember when I was new, I would call my DM and ask him where he wanted me to head after I unloaded if I didn't have a pre plan. I was in SF one time and he told me to find a place to park. I laughed and deadheaded to lathrop...MosquitoBandito Thanks this. -
Holy cow, its a small world! The yard I worked at was two doors down from there at Evans & Toland, which is now a FedEx distribution center.. The building next to HD Supply used to be Parisian French Bread, which had awesome San Francisco sourdough. I used to get to work at 0500 and grab a hot loaf right off the line for $1 and have it with coffee for breakfast. Those were the days... Sadly, SF has really gone down the crapper since then...
