I saw a driver force a four wheeler onto the shoulder to keep from getting hit head on. Almost ran the truck he was passing off the road in his desperation to get back over. Saw another truck pass the same a-whole who wouldn't take it out of cruise control for five seconds on a hill and get over right before a car came over the hill. After an ice/snowstorm I saw three rollovers in a 50 mile stretch near Dalhart, TX. But I guess you know everything.

if all you can do is drive the interstate
i guess you better stay on itscottlav46 Thanks this. -
I'll drive it, just not when it's icy. Not after what I saw that day.

Personally I agree with jc. 80 was more than a breeze and I would say not a costly as 70 due to it being mostly fly driven. Furthermore highways will get you in trouble in my opinion. I will never take another one if at ALL possible. I did just recently in KY AND I don't care to remember the exact number. It was night, two lanes, raining and mountainous. The fricken road was 65mph with local trafic WITHOUT turning lanes, and did I mention raining and mountainous oh and dark as all ...... I won't even mention the hwys in ny pa and everywhere else mountainous. I looked at that shortcut south and it was never option. Good day. COPY!

As far as US-54 from Tucumcari to Wichita, I used to run that pretty much every week at night, team driving coast to coast. It's not bad if you pay attention, and the best option for diagonal runs from the Midwest and upper Midwest to I-40.
Dave_in_AZ and Cranky Yankee Thank this. -
I can tell you some crazy stories from my early years about driving in Ky and WV at night. Those were the days before I had the sense to park it for the night. Rain, fog and sometimes ice; Never again!

I roll on lots of US Highways & even state highways at times.
When you gain experience you will learn to choose where to take the more direct route, or give up some miles for time or less wear on yourself or the truck.
But if you never want to drive on US or State highways, just interstates, you might want to rethink your occupation.
I know LOTS of US highways that I prefer over interstates.
As far as going over Vail, everybody probably ignorant to the trade to do that once. I go around that even in the summer.
Now where you want to try is the US 160 through Durango, that's Wolf Creek pass.
Be safe drivers. -
Yes there are some, but most of the time you never know until you get there and to look at highway transportation as either/or and get one of the many bad ones, a driver will wound up in a morestressful situation than necessary 7 out of 10.
