my husband is cleared to come over to jct. Thank you for posting your actual
    Statements.

I got out the calculator, correct me if I'm wrong, but:

week 4/1 you had 2519 miles and took home $565.93, that's .22 cpm.

Week 3/25 you had 3235 miles and brought home $904.76 that's .27 cpm

It doesn't sound good at all, what am I missing? Thanks

You aren't missing anything at all. I don't take care of my fuel economy as much as I could. I have a lead foot, and I eat it a little there. Bad habit, I know. It's one I've been trying to work at, and I've been slowly getting better. Also, fuel prices have been rising a bit. And during those weeks, I bought fuel in the west. Buying fuel in California will always bite you. I was also experimenting with buying fuel at different locations other than Flying J, looking to see how much difference I could make in my fuel economy.

Here's another paycheck for you to look at...

That's 3678 miles for a net of 1631.21 for a total of .44 per mile. As I've said, with leasing, you have to understand that YOU have a lot of influence over how much you make. Much more than you do as a company driver. There are definite fluctuations. You have to be prepared for zero dollar paychecks. They are going to happen, no matter how hard you try. But then you get paychecks like the one above. I've had better, and I've had worse. It's just a fact of the business. Also, remember that I have one of the higher payments for a truck. The only trucks that had higher payments when I came through orientation were the Petes. I got the truck I wanted. I didn't take this truck and get out here just to make money. Not all the trucks have side notes (the down payment) I wish I still had the paper that had what all the different payments were for all the different trucks. I chose my truck based on something I would be comfortable in, and would enjoy driving long term. It really depends on what you're looking for. If you go drive for Schneider or any other large company, they give you the trucks they use so that they can make as much profit as reasonable. Why would you get a Freightliner Century with a Detroit and a 10 speed? The truck is about as cheap as they can get and get decent fuel economy.

I wanted a truck that I could be proud of. It is coming at a large price. I'm not going to debate that. But that was my choice. And I don't regret it at all. I'm still making decent money driving a truck I love. And I enjoy my job. What more could I ask for?

We drive for prime, things ain't so great here.

Ok, more questions if you don't mind?

I notice a .75 charge every time you fuel, what is this for?

Is flying j the only fuel stop jct has a contract for a discount? Do you have to pay actual pump price at pilot, t/a, and the rest?

When they schedule your appts do they give you plenty of time to make it on time? I ask because I have yet to see a jct truck go below 65 mph. Do they expect you to get the load there on time no matter the cost? I ask because the way things are going we won't fudge the log book any more (in 5 years we've only late a few times do to breakdown or weather, we won't chain anymore)

What is jct policy if you refuse to chain?

    Thanks again

We get charged .75 every time our fuel card is swiped. According to JCT, they get charged 1.50, and they split it with us. Flying J is the only place we get a discount. We pay cash price everywhere else. We only get a .02 discount at Flying J, which we get back every three months. (kind of nice to get that bonus every three months...)

As for loads being legal, the majority of the loads I've gotten have been able to be run legally. I do get them every once in a while that there is no way they can get there legally. But, if you tell them you can't get the load there, they find someone that can. I've swapped out loads several times where either I can't get it there, or I'm taking someone else's load that they can't get there. There is no backlash if you tell them you can't do it.

As for chains. They do expect you to hang them and run. However, I refused to chain up to go over Donner back in December when I had only 2500 pounds in the trailer. I got a short argument from night shift that ended when I offered to let them fly out and chain up my truck for me. I told them they were more than welcome to drive my truck over if they felt it was safe when I didn't. That ended the discussion in a hurry. I was told to let them know when I was able to go. Beyond that, I wouldn't know how much they will argue because I chain up most of the time when I have to, and go without chains when I can get away with it. (have a ticket from doing so...)

As for the truck's speed, there are some of our drivers that go slower trying to improve fuel economy. But our trucks are geared to fly. At 65ish, I'm turning around 1300 RPM in top hole. At 72, I'm still under 1500 RPM. I am a leadfoot, so I do push the envelope. I find myself passing Prime trucks all day long.

I don't mind answering any and all questions. I'm in the middle of a pain in the a@# load, so I have some time to fart around on the puter right now. (load has a 3am appointment, then a 6am appointment) I can't guarantee how fast I will respond, but I will.

My wife and being a team, we get a lot of swaps that solo drivers can not make on time. There has been times when a solo driver has a break down, and can not make the delivery on time because of not enough hours, and we will take the load. There biggest concern is on time delivery. We were late for a wal mart delivery, but it wasn't our fault. They informed Wal Mart and we got in after the MAJIC hour

being late for a wal mart load scares me almost as much as the irs does.

It's a relief to know they don't force you to run illegal.

The charge for using fuel card and the no discounts at the pump (other then the J) sucks.

I think my husband is going to start off teaming with our son for 6 months or so, see how it goes. I've been teaming with him off and on for 5 years, I'm ready to go home to the grandkids.

Thanks for all the information, he's scheduled for orientation the first week of June.

Oh, and next time you pass a prime, wave, it might be me.

One more thing, does anyone know what the payments are on a cascadia? We don't want one, hate this truck, but I'd like to compare jct's price to primes.

    Thanks again

I started in August, and missed my request in January. I gave that one to weather. That said, I think they're about to blow a second one. I'm intentionally letting it slide. Mainly because I'm curious what they're going to do. My home request is in for next Thursday. I live near Seattle. I'm under a 2900 mile load that finishes near Daytona, FL on Monday morning. Do you see the problem coming? I saw it flash bright when I got the load. I've been debating what to do about it. Especially when I'm swinging through the yard tomorrow evening. I think I'm just going to leave it alone and see how it plays out. The exact day to get home is currently unimportant to me. (it was when I requested it, however...)
