My list of must-haves for OTR would be APU, or some companies simply don't complain about idling the truck engine and using the heating and air conditioner as much as you want. Of the two options, I prefer an APU because , unlike just running the truck engine, you get at least one household electrical outlet with 110v AC power just like you have in your home. That means you can charge your phone laptop/tablet, and maybe even a coffee maker, or MAYBE microwave oven. The inverter connected to your APU needs to be probably 1500-2000 watts to run a microwave. It probably needs to be 1000-1500 watts to run a coffee-maker. Either way the APU is my only really must-have. I can get by with my own electric cooler (sold in truck stops for $150 or less), although a built-in refrigerator is 100 times better and more reliable than an electric cooler. I went 3 years with electric coolers and definitely spent more on replacement power cords than on the coolers. A built-in fridge is just plain better in every way, but the built-ins can cost $600. There are compressor-based portable refrigerator, I think Dometic is the biggest brand, that may cost $200-400 and are like a portable ice cooler except they work just like your home fridge works instead of the puny way an electric cooler works. I think Apricool is a good reliable unit. They come in different sizes with different prices.
I've had trucks with APU, built-in fridge, in-motion satellite TV/DVR, and satellite radio, but APU is a must-have. I'm addicted to air conditioning and will confess to anything to stay cool. Don't buy anything for the truck before you see what truck you will drive. Some companies seem to be competing about how many driver features they can supply. I would recommend a CB radio, although only about 10% of drivers have or use a CB anymore. It's less useful than it was many years ago, but it is still useful on rare occasions when nothing else is. If you have one you can always turn it off or on. If you don't have one it can never help you. You don't need a world-beater CB a $120 CB is the most you MIGHT want or need, but not before you have a truck. CB is not worth the money for a city type job and many drivers would say it's not worth any money for OTR.
Good starter in Oregon?

Thank you so much, as always you've been an amazing help!Another Canadian driver and tscottme Thank this. -
FYI, you can bring your food, keep it cool, and most other thing without an APU, but it's not as fast, convenient, easy in 12 volts.
Chris6785 and Another Canadian driver Thank this.
