Dollar tree sucks. The way they have it set up, you have to rush sometimes so you make the deadline.

Werner offered me a dollar tree position over the phone a year ago. (Mind you, I'm working for another company at the time). I tell them "well who is going to be driving the truck to these stores?". They said 'well that's why we are calling you"

Laughed right in his face and hung up.

You can rush while unloading. Trying to rush a back usually ends up taking longer anyway.

If you miss a deadline you miss a deadline.

Who you going to hire, the guy who missed a couple deadlines but has no incidents or you guy who got fired for hitting too much stuff?

Be the tortoise, not the hare.

I bet it pays great though if you have been with the company along time but if your a new driver getting new driver pay. I’m guessing it’s more work (headache) than it’s worth. Unless everyone their is payed same

@HotH2o hit the nail on the head.

@Trucks66 if you want to gain confidence backing, then practice backing in tough situations is what you want. While I agree with folks that note you got bamboozled into the "rare opportunity", you just might want to make the most of the challenge.

Backing takes months or years for some folks to get really good at, especially if they are OTR with relatively rare difficult backs. You have a steady diet of difficult. Thrive on it.

Don't quit the Dollar Tree account until that day you can honestly say to yourself, "I've GOT this". THEN you can walk tall and go seek the next level of challenge. If OTR pulling dry van is your goal you will be miles ahead. However, think outside the box (dry van) for more challenges. This industry offers plenty of opportunities to be a rookie all over again: reefer, flatbed, tanker, etc. The more difficulty and challenges you overcome, the more valuable you become and you will make more money and get more opportunities and respect.

I'm a few years in. Sure I can eff up a back here or there and do a dozen pull ups, especially if I am tired or pulling an unfamiliar trailer set up (STILL figuring out how to efficiently back split axle ISO tanks). But normally if a customer asks if I can get my trailer into a tight spot I now can say, "If a truck can fit, I'll get it there".

Dollar General doesn't have docks. Werner does those too.

He should leave Werner. A couple of drivers Werner fired from that account were even turned down by Carolina Cargo and they hire most anyone.
