A lot of those rock crushers/grinders are only allowed to move during winter or they have to buy big permits .. I've seen more than a few moving at night or weekends most likely on the sly

My company has a couple of towable "tub" wood grinders with this problem. While we have 6, 7, and 8 axle annual OS/OW permits, 2 of our machines were built so that they are about 300-400lbs. over one one axle (the towables are all tridems). 99% of the time when going thru a coop, they see I am well under the permit max gross weight and wish me a safe trip.....BUT every once in awhile you get that one bear with a chip on their shoulder and they write me up. Only thing you can do is smile and pay the ticket. If you were to make a scene, technically they can shut you down until you are legal, soooooo....

As for the factory builds....They try to get it as close to legal as they can, but their main concern is that their machine operates correctly, everything else is just details. Plus, every state is different as far as max allowable axle weights, etc., so it would be even harder for them to build to their specs, while ALSO making them road legal for all lower 48 states, so they just get it "close", IMO......

I ran a tri drive Western Star "super vac" in North Dakota and was on a job one day just west of Williston. We we're potholing on a pipeline and once the tank would get full I had to make a left onto the county road and a quick right to the dump pit.Well as I am backing to the pit on a gravel road I see NDDOT to the side of me and didn't pay no mind because I thought I had done nothing wrong. The officer walked up as I was getting out and asked if the tank was full which I responded "yes" and he said to follow him to the scale which was almost 20 minutes from where we were at.Once we weighed the truck it was overweight by a crazy amount and the fine was $3500.The owners were pissed, but more pissed off at the dot officer for having me drive that far down the road with that amount of weight.

he should of had portable scales with him unless you guys are turning corners quickly and chewing up asphalt it sounds like a money grab .. I know many guys that if they were on private property they would've dumped load then followed him lol

That's why Oh. back in the 80's banned air operated tail gates from the cabs. Too many guys popping the switch when getting pulled over. littering ticket was cheaper than the over weight ticket
