GPS choices?

    I've always wondered, why does nobody ever use the navigation/directions from the Qualcomm or whatever brand of ELD? I thought they all have it on there. I realize not everybody has one but it seems all those that do never use it.

    Sorry if this is stupid, and I am not trying to go off in a different direction with the OP's thread, just curious (I do not drive yet, just hanging out trying to suck up some information waiting to get out of my current situation so I can).

    Rand McNally if given the choice. 730 model is great, the tablet has some great extra features in it including dash cam. I received an email from TA/Petro, they have a bundle package sale going on right now on Rand McNally trucker GPS...if I remember correctly, it was the TND 730 and Rand McNally dash cam for 299.99.
    But as the others have said, don't rely on it. Map book and common sense over a GPS.

    The GPS has better points of interest. I can search for truck stops that have laundry and showers, or tripak, a drop box, etc...

    Alot of routing "issues" come from it thinking you can't make a left turn, mostly divided roads. From a stop in DC...

    Like so many things, your answer will change based on age group. The older drivers will tell you you NEED to have a Atlas, which isn't a bad idea but the REALITY is, once it's printed, it's out of date. Road restrictions will happen, bridge heights will change, roads can be one way'd etc, The GPS's stay up to date with this stuff once that cities GIS records are updated (which is usually close to right away) while the Atlas is just wrong until the next year. There's not a SINGLE THING that the Rand McNally Atlas knows, that the Rand McNally GPS doesn't know.

    Can A GPS sometimes just pick a completely retarded way to send you to a place? YUP! But that's (usually) not the case. Sometimes there's some opinion on which one is better but if you think logically say between a Rand Atlas and a Rand GPS there's no way to rationalize the Atlas over the GPS given it's always more out of date and slower to get the job done. I do still keep an Atlas for birds eye view in the event that I need one, but if that happens twice a year most of the time. My GPS and Google Earth are life savers. Now if you start intermixing brands then there can be some differences of opinion of what info is more up to date.

    That is all very true, and I think accurate, but I still keep and recommend an atlas for one reason... it doesn't need a power cord, it's battery never runs dead.

    Like you, I rarely use the one I have, don't remember the last time I seriously looked at it, but it's still old tech that's always at the ready when the hi tech crashes.
