The driver is clearly at fault here. However, the judge is a jacka**. Wonder how many car drivers he has jailed for moving violations? He seen truck company dollar signs,
Red Hot Mess Thanks this. -
Probably because the engineer limited the new structure to 10 tons.
-
Nope. It is most likely that removal of the sign was not in the scope of work.
And nobody cares anymore, enough to ask someone, "there is a ten ton sign when approaching from the south. Should that be removed?"
Then someone would have to be responsible enough to make a decision, etc...

Wow some of these post are ridiculous... People make mistakes in life but they don't get huge fines or jailed for it.... A fine sure he was in a area he was over weight limited for. But a $12,000 fine this is just a money grabber from that the government is taking... Lets be realistic these "fines" are suppose to be there to make up for damages and such.. Do you really think that the truck made $12,000 worth of damage on the road by going down it ONE time...
The jail time is just way out to lunch.. I have seen on the new people doing REAL crimes and not getting jailed for it or getting a slap on the wrist.. We talking about a guy who made some mistakes (I have yet to find one person in this world that is perfect) and he for jailed for 5 days for going down the wrong road.. Have you not gone down the wrong road? maybe going faster then the speed limit?? parking in a no parking zone?? Got into an accident...??
We are all humans and make mistakes.. How do you know that maybe he got down that road and had no place to turn around??? I went down a road that looked like something I could take half way down the road I got a tonnage sign and I was over it.. I had NO WHERE to turn around.... You think he is going to back up into a driveway of a house or something to get turned around...
It's like the signs that say "no trucks".. Well it's nice the sign is there but it would be even nicer if I could see the sign before I even make my turn... Right hand turn onto a no truck street.. Well you can't see the f'in until your already on the street.. So what purpose does it serve???snowblind Thanks this. -
The fines are also supposed to be a deterrant. I was going to ask if the fines were so high because he was hauling a hazmat? (if I remember the first post correctly)

Gps.....back when we started trucking, we didnt have GPS, heck we didnt even have cell phones...or qualcomm for that matter...still dont use gps...we use something most drivers have never used,
A MAP!!!!
-
Let me get this straight, this poor truck driver, though I will say was totally at fault, sat in jail for 5 days because of a failure to comprehend the proper use of a GPS, but that degenerate Jerry Sandusky spent only 5 hours in jail for his "alleged" crimes? I think the state of Pennsylvania needs to take a hard long look at themselves.
Red Hot Mess and volvo244t Thank this. -
Exactly what the article quote them as saying. They raised the bail because they ASSUMED the company would pay it. Kudos to them for sticking up for their employee (lease op or not) and not forking over the money that the idiots thought they could extort. (Because that is exactly what it was EXTORTION!)
I do agree he should have had more sense than to follow a GPS. All TRUELY experienced truckers know those things are for guidance only and you should always use a good old fashion map to do your routing.rodzilla Thanks this. -
No... They were both in jail for as long as it took to post bail.
the company probably told him to plead not guilty, but he obviously was. If he had just admitted fault and set up a payment plan he would have walked out that day.
