There's no best GPS any more than there's a best truck or guitar, it's user dependent.

Try it, if you don't like it, return it. No gadget has yet eliminated the need for the most recent print version of the Rand McNally Motor Carrier Atlas.

i use copilot. installed on whatever phone or tablet i have.

we always buy phones. or tablets. i, however, am not buying units. software is a 1 time fee.

there's another app, called be on road. that's much cheaper. but not as user friendly.

I am ashamed to admit this but Rand McNally saved my butt one time from hitting a low bridge. The instant I turned on that highway underpass it alerted me with a vertical height violation warning. So I will always be a loyal customer to that brand. Of course I cannot rely on it every single time I am about to do something stupid, never since then have I failed to check a bridge before plowing through.

No extra cost, except for your own wifi connection. And that can be costly, depending on what you use. Especially if you keep it connected.
Just connect the RM unit like you would your computer and you're good to go.

I think real-time traffic costs extra, but most wifi functions are included.

I bought the Garmin Dezl six weeks ago and I couldn't be more disappointed. The device freezes up regularly, and often the voice command is to turn in a direction completely opposite of what I know to be correct. For $425 bucks I expected better. I've owned Garmin before and loved it but this one reminds me every day that like a wife, it's there just to offer companionship and can't be depended on for reliable navigational aid.

In 2007 I paid less than $100 for "Microsoft Streets and Trips GPS version" and installed it on my net book an I have been using it ever since. Every delivery I have ever made is saved in there as a "push pin" on the map as well as all the truck stops. It is NOT truck specific but that doesn't matter to me since even a truck specific GPS cannot be trusted. That's why I cross check my route against the Rand McNally Atlas and read road signs. If you want to choose your own route I believe S&T is the way to go. It's hard to argue $100 for 7 years.

EDIT: I am on my 3rd laptop.....the current one is an "Acer Aspire One D257-13448" (Intel Atom N455 1.66 GHz CPU with 512 KB cache, 1 GB DDR3 RAM, 250 GB Hard drive). 1st one fried I think because I was putting it on the passenger seat and the cooling vents were blocked off. I moved the 2nd one to the dash area with a custom built tray and chill mat but then water leaked in around the windshield and ruined the LCD display.

    Hope this helps.

I used S&T myself, I think it's the best. v2001 cost me $7. The Magellan GPS315 was $150, and I still use both for flying. AFAIK v2001 can't be beat for waterways or obscure airports.
