    {quote}it's summertime. that means construction. our all mighty atlas got us to town. not a problem. BUT NOW. we're here. in the middle of the night. no one is around to call cuz they're all in bed. AND, the freeway is closed due to construction. DETOUR. now you're really screwed cuz you have no idea where your at. and no place to park to figure it out. (say los angeles). where there isn't ALWAYS a sign to show you the way. {quote}

    Really good point here....Valid and all. But here is where that phone call to the customer once you are able to make it after loading/once you're underway..it's here where it Really comes into play...that short conversation can and will make the difference..."IF" you ask the proper questions... ....is there any construction going on , either during the day or night that may hinder my ability to get to your lot , or find a parking/safe staging area before-hand...if so please direct me to an area that can accommodate me.

    We can go back and forth on which is better , atlas/gps/phone calls to infinity...but the fact remains that its not how , or what sort of technology we choose to use.....to get the info/directions/coordinates to our destination..... its getting there safely that matters...Its already been said more than once....get and use as much info as you can....learn how to use a map/atlas/gps....plus a phone conversation to get the job done......they all work.

    I like the TND 720 best because I get traffic, weather and yes construction information because I use my cell as a Wifi hotspot. But the guy that mentioned PCMiler, which is the same as the CoPilot software that I mentioned that I use in conjuction with my TND 720. I think the two GPS system has never lead me wrong, especially when you look at where you are going on Google Earth prior to starting your trip. I personally have no use for an atlas, like I said it is somewhere in the truck, but I have never needed it.

    And with that GPS and your cell phone .. Guess what, you won't get lonely in that truck.. Because the government is right along with you. And you wonder why that log book doesn't go with what the computer in that patrol car says.

    Don't even need the GPS side for that. Cellphones are also tracked by which tower you are currently using. Not as accurate of course, but good enough to prove you weren't were you said you were. In any civil proceeding, you're going to be painted as one step below dirt, no matter how tight a ship you run. The main thing the gov't has been using is the fuel transaction data, I know of at least three companies in my small world where the auditor walked into a follow-up audit with the fuel records in his hand and started asking for logs. And I'll tell you that the MN DOT has the phone number for most of the major shippers in the area in their phone, and will call the guardhouse as a matter of course if they sniff anything fishy.

    And Gold Miner, validating on google maps is equivalent to the atlas in a lot of respects, especially on a tablet where the zooming in and out is so easy. The verification with another source was the main point I'm trying to make; get an overview on a map that shows enough detail to validate the GPS' choices. The atlas is still easier to deal with on the fly, if needed in pinch. (I don't have a mount for the tablet.)
