A GPS is just a tool... use some common sense and a good map along with it and you're good to go :)

I currently just use google maps in conjuction with the atlas, I punch in where I wanna go, compare it to my fuel route, and the atlas, if it all matches up, good, if not, well slight adjustments are made to avoid dangerous areas. I then punch it into the qualcom maptuit, and check that with everything else so far, and if it all matches up, its all good, thought about buying a gps, mostly because you can save routes, which could save me time down the line, but $400 isnt really worth the 15-20 mins time it will save me

Need more input on the Cobra... I am thinking of getting one of those... I have read a lot of bad problems about the Rand McNally on the net.

I used a Garmin with the Nuwa map downloads in a trainers truck. It worked well but screen was a bit small. The thing I like most about it was it would show you which lanes to get in way ahead of time, so you could plan in big cities which lane to be in...

My advice on GPS is first learn how to drive without it, then add it to your tool box. I don't useit for anything more than figuring out mileage...and then, I only use the Google maps in my phone. I can't justify the expense.

I agree with you Injun, but like I said one safety feature I like was that it would show us newbies which lane to get in way ahead of the exit. When I was up in Cincinnita, OH. The GPS was a big help with the lanes going all over the place and the road signs were not very good.

I had a student one time that would becoming up to a freeway split. The little 3D lane assist on the Randmcnally would show an idiogram of a two lane insterstate (it was actually two lanes and would have a short exit land for the other freeway) and the little arrow on said idiogram would point forward in the LEFT lane. So every time he would come to one of these splits he would promptly put his left turn signal on and move over to the hammer lane. Even after a month he still did it. One day I asked him'Hey man wtf are you doing? You've been on my truck for a month now and you still don't know about the splits yet?!' His response 'Lucy told me to move over so I did!'

After that student when I finished driving and it was my student turn I promptly removed Lucy from her mount and took her in the back with me. Some people lack the most basic common sense.......

I agree you have to use common sense with these, but it is better than him rushing to change lanes because the road signs were not posted far enough back to give a driver enough time to prepare to exit.

I would have to disagree with statement two there. Although yes you should never rush to change a lane unless it is an emergency maneuver. In that case I would say if you can not change lanes in a safe manner, pass it and go to the next one and turn around. That has happened to me a lot and has happened to every one of us. The whole point is to operate your equipment safely and be courtesy to others (even when those nasty 4 wheelers cut 3 feet in front of you and flip you off because obviously you were in the wrong) At least that's how I trained my students.

A car GPS will do the trick only if you had a trucker's map book near by..:yes2557:
