I hate the phone because my is so small, guess if you had a tablet or one of the bigger screened phones that would be ok, but with the GPS on Rand McNallly or whatever brand you use, you can hear the directions before you get to a turn, it can be mounted where you can see it easier than a phone screen.
I also like google maps, to google the location and see the area better. There are some of the addresses which have rural numbers or highways that the Rand won't p/u, I can google the area and find a cross street or whatever sometimes where husband can use that to get him to the right area. I also check the address a lot of times if the company he drives for does not give any directions to the place, that sometimes with them is the indicator the address is wrong or somewhere else and they too never seem to update or check information before they send the load out; makes me wonder how they get paid sometimes.
We had a car garmin when I rode with him before, loved being able to make via points to get it on the right road (Rand I think you can do that with, just detour button is all), but we went by company preplanned routes and their end directions, and made sure it was only on bigger roads in town when leaving or otherwise, plus checked map for low bridges or restricted areas. The only problem now there are so many areas that are restricted popping up all over the place; go through one place and then 2 wks later it is restricted; this is where the truckers version hopefully helps some xxxxxxx cross your fingers.
