So in that case, what about a GPS that you pre-program before your trip? Like the software, where you can double check the route and make sure it's safe?

That's what your atlas is for.I always check my GPS routing against my company's routing and my atlas. If either one disagrees with my GPS,I disregard the GPS.I also call my customers so I have a heads-up if I'm going to encounter anything unusual.I see that you're a student. If he doesn't do it,ask your trainer to randomly quiz you on what the sign you just passed says.Reading signs needs to be a habit.I haven't been driving that long, but these are things my trainer taught me,and it's kept me out of trouble so far.Looking for an easier way than using your atlas will get you in trouble.I've had a GPS stop working twice.Best thing that could happen if I hadn't planned my trip on paper is that I would've had to pull over for an hour in the middle of my trip to plan it.Worst thing would be I miss a turn and get in trouble.

S&T (for laptops) will allow you to click and drag to modify the route it gives you. Someone told me Co-pilot (for laptops) allows click and drag also. On the other hand, we have a driver that uses 5" Cobra (no laptop, stand alone GPS) and another that uses the 7" Cobra (no laptop, stand alone GPS) and they can't do it.....so IMO the Cobra's are useless for route planning and I have no use for them. Screens are too small for my liking anyway.
Once you use a 10" display and a route planning feature that allows you to click and drag, I don't think you will ever use anything else. You couldn't pry this from my cold dead hands. -
I could not find a Rand McNally 2013 Motor Carrier Deluxe Road Atlas at any Walmart or Barnes N Noble. Where do I find these things?

I bought mine on ebay for $40 shipped

Book stores do not carry them in general. You can find them at the nearest TA or other truck stop.

Wow the closest truck stop to me is FAR! LOL!

Yeah I get it, I can buy it off the internet, I have to leave by next week to Dallas. I'm not sure if I'll get it on time if I order from the internet. I may stop at a truck stop while I drive to Dallas to pick it up. I see some outrageous prices for those though! Its 39.99 on their site but in stores it may be more expensive!

They are selling the deluxe for around $30 at most of the major truckstops, sometimes, the newest ones will be a bit higher but 2013 has been out for over 6 months. Some smaller truck stops will have them, too but pricing varies up to the amount on the back of the cover. Pilot/ Flying J, Loves and Petro/ TA are the majors. Petro /TA has the large print edition available at $60 but that is only at those 2, they have the exclusive.
You can get back issues on E-bay cheaper, and the details and correctness suffer little.pharrari Thanks this.
