I have a gps that sits on the dash and basically never gets turned on these days. A rand atlas is close to useless for finding your route in a city. It is great for info and main road routes but the mini city maps suck. I used to swear by my $500 rand tnd 700. Then I learnt how to drive properly and turned the silly thing off. Your atlas will get you to the city or town your headed for, then the best thing to do is buy a city specific map and call for directions. Right down the directions then match them up to your new city map. Look at the route youre taking and make a short list of possible escape routes/turnaround places and also get a mental "lay of the land". Once you have done this then turn on your annoying electronic voice box and proceed to ignore it as you no longer need it! If you use the manual way of directions and paper maps I guarentee that you will forever remember how to get to that destination. Gps rots your brain and stops the thought process of driving and changes it to "holding a steering wheel"!

Actually that can be one of the best things to do , maybe not in a big city, but definatly in a town or rural area. I have stopped at gas stations and post offices in rural areas and been given good directions to places I am looking for.

As you should know how to read a map, um... I think as the world progresses so does everything else. They say older people are stuck in their ways. Lol.....

I use Garmin 465 T have used it on every trip since January 2010. I wouldn't say its perfect but it is the best one I have used. It has never got me lost or put me where I shouldn't. Just got a map update and just makes it even better. Just remember where you come from, using GPS in a big truck they aren't perfect and proper planning, common sense, and an updated map is still needed to find your destination driver.

Got my new Garmin 465 two weeks ago. Coming west on Route 32 in southern Ohio it told me to make a right. AFTER I turned I see the sign "No Through Trucks". Fortunately that was just a 2 mile connector road to a state road 73, but that was a nightmare of a road. Nonstop hills and 30 mph curves. So...they are not infallible. It was my dumb for not doing enough map work and realizing it would have been smarter to go a few miles further and take 32 all the way to 23 south.
