I use mine when I need too, but find myself studying the map image on the screen (I keep it zoomed out quite a ways) which helps me later on if I am in that area.

I drove in the early 90's when GPS's were not out yet. I'm getting ready to go back out on the road again after a 16 year absence. Whether GPS, Google Maps, Streets n Trips, etc.... I think they will be a great "TOOL" for me in my future driving. I plan on using it "as a comparison" to the route I have chosen from the Atlas to compare miles, time driving, and also use it to see street names at my destination. Other than that I don't think I would trust the technology to keep me on truck routes and keep me away from low bridges, weight restrictions, etc...

Are they necessary? Of course not. Could they possibly make your job, trip planning more efficient? I think they would. Just my .02 cents
