Do I need to take a refresher at this point?
There is a company I will go to and try the road test. Have a good memory on what I learned but a bit nervous about it.

I would suggest going back to the school you trained at and see if they offer a one-day refresher course. It certainly can't hurt.

I did and they wanted 1500 dollars.

To be honest my time at the trucking school wasn't overall great and it's made me hesitate to get into trucking. Was paired with a guy who didn't speak English too well, made many mistakes. I tried to help him but there was a communication barrier. The teacher raised his voice multiple times over mistakes too. Cost me 2500 with the other 2000 paid for by a state agency. I passed and got my CDL but the experience left a bad impression. I should have just went straight into the first company that was going to hire me but at the time I was unsure if I was moving out of state.

Sorry to hear that. Don't worry too much about the instructor raising his voice at you; heck, I had an instructor throw his clipboard in the cab once, but he was also an excellent instructor with forty years in the industry. You can bet I paid attention to him after that!
There were many times I asked myself if I had gotten in over my head, or made a mistake. But I'm 23 years behind the wheel now, with no regrets, and now in a position where I could move into management if I ever decide I can't, or don't want to continue driving.
Unless you know someone who knows someone who will let you practice beforehand, you're just going to have to go off memory and hope for the best on your road test.

23 years. That is impressive. Would you say the roads have become a lot busier and tougher? Yeah that's exactly how I felt. Like I was in over my head. I got the shifting down quick but downshifting was my only issue. I know the instructor was just helping and it's all about safety, so I can understand why he was doing it.Thanks I will give this road test a go and if I have to will just look at Western Express' refresher or something.

What area are you in? BTW, I lasted a whole month OTR and decided it wasn't for me. I have been working local my entire career since then. It was a rough beginning, I had three jobs in a year and a half before hiring on with an LTL company where I stayed for eighteen years before moving to where I'm at now.

The roads have definitely gotten worse in my region, at least, for several reasons: bad drivers, and vastly more of them, worn out infrastructure, etc...

I am near Portland. That's why I recognized your profile pic. Providence. Didn't know they hire local truckers. I wanted to go OTR to see the US for a new place to live someday and work on my own.

We have drivers in Portland six nights a week, I'm usually one of them. We're based out of Lacey, WA, and cover Washington, northern Oregon, and Missoula, MT.
