Wow, today got a real education about why most of us want to be O/Os. Many of you will remember that in starting this my goal was to help other O/Os achieve a dream of more independence. We have really grown and learned a lot over the past year.
But I was reminded today by a driver that the dream is about having more control and it is not always about money. I was concerned about this driver because of the areas he wanted to run and the lack of money that he is making. He sent a message today thanking us for allowing him the freedom to run how he likes and providing the support to do that.
Some of my drivers have called us the little Landstar or Like Landstar but better. Because we allow drivers to run themselves but with a lot more freight. And while I am critical of LS because of the rates to the truck (still think those cuts are almost criminal) I understand why there is such a high level of satisfaction. You are an O/O and get to run your business they way you want.
Thought I would share as a way to let any others that are O/Os and feel like you have no control and are grinding it out on mileage gig. There are companies out here that will treat you fair, let you be the boss and still earn a great living.
Great Learning Moment

I really like what it seems you are saying but I want to add to use what I call the "trampoline" business model - dont jump harder than you can fall - then also a question I asked an MBA who worked at [ major air-carrer ] central operations resulted in the realization that every business, from kid-operated to major world-class, faces essentially the same risk / reward issues
O/O is a long-term horizon sight-point for me and would like to be there but there are no "magi" that can do anything the rest of us cannot so if someone tell a reader of this that they can the best thing is what we tell people in computer work: "don't quit your day job" & sometimes it is not even fair treatment or boss with a brain that matters, even a crude operation that one could run an antique mack & 5x4 that hangs can be what O/O is all about if that is where one wants to be
for me the one place I do not want to be is someone running trainees into the ground pushing too hard, most of the rest I can issue responses for from 100,000 hours of working -
I have heard Landstar is a real good company. They're 100% O/O.These lease operators are nothing more then company drivers making the trk payments for the company,They don't get the freedom,I don't think they can pick their own loads and they still have to drive a slow governed trk.I don't care if you're leasing or if you're an O/O,companies should not even touch your trk without your approval.Lease operators have no control I don't think.
windsmith Thanks this. -
