I understand now. Went back and read all posts by our O/P. Sounds like he feels taken advantage of because he claimed he wasn't getting paid by his former employer, an O/O leased on to Mason-Dixon. Yet, he had enough money in his pocket to abandon the O/O's equipment and take a bus 350 miles home. Now, it appears Mason-Dixon reports to USIS. Our O/P has discovered most large companies will check his DAC and now that there is an equipment abandonment on his report, employment is appearing out of reach. Therefore, O/Os and large companies are "greedy" and only out to take advantage of the drivers.

Have I got that about right?

Well...it's because there is an endless line of people waiting in line to spend $4000 on trucking school and get into this business. And then there are plenty of drivers, and wannabee drivers coming over from other countries. And just to make drivers even more expendable, Obama is bending over backwards to get Mexican trucks into the US.

As a business owner, I have to say there is no endless supply of GOOD drivers. We are a small company. We don't need to hire 10 drivers a week to keep our trucks full. However, we struggle to find high quality drivers. If you are a true professional you should realize there is a big difference between you and someone fresh out of school. If you have more than one year OTR with a reasonably clean record and good work history you should have no problem finding a good trucking job. You also have to do your due diligence. Research the company you are going to work for. Talk to others that have worked there. Did they make money? Were they happy? I am sure there are some great small fleet owners to work for. However, you have to realize this is much more risky than working for an established company. All I am saying is there a lot of good opportunities out there...just keep searching for them.

I have to say that I go along with this one. The hubby and I have talked about getting a second truck, and putting a good driver or team into it, but where do you find good help? It's especially screwed up right now, with CSA2010, which, in my opinion, is just a power play by the big carriers to put smaller carriers and independents out of business. If a carrier can afford to keep turning over new drivers, who have no points on their records, they can survive, while the troopers are out writing bogus tickets just as fast as then can pull trucks over, racking up the points on experienced drivers who cost more, and putting them out of business.

Maybe I'm talking nonsense, or maybe one can just open the eyes and see that I am not. Since I returned to town yesterday, we had to make a quick trip to Phoenix and back, which is about 200 miles round trip from Heritage. We saw eight trucks pulled over by state troopers! That's one every 25 miles, peoples. They're out for truck driver blood right now, and, I know I am going way out on a limb to make this accusation, but I honestly believe that the big carriers are behind it. What else makes sense...perhaps...to believe that your government has suddenly developed a hardon for your safety? Yeah, right.

How do you find good help? Take out an ad saying exactly what kind of equipment and freight you run, what you would pay for a wage, what kind of benefits you offer and what you expect from any applicants (good record, no job hoppers, etc. Be honest. If you are honest a good driver will find you. Oh sure you are gonna have to weed through some crappy applications to find the right guy. Here is a tip, the right guy will open the hood and pull out the dipstick before he starts your truck.
