I'm hoping I don't catch a lot of flack for this, but here we go.. I really really believe when learning to downshift, you should go down every gear. Whatever gear you get up to in traffic, keep dropping one by one all the way down to one. This will keep your eyes on the road (the lady texting in front of you) I do not like the idea of new drivers trying to look at rpms and not the road. This of course does not include, hills ect.. but the shift will come to you, later.. by way of sound, and sight,. You will find, in time, you will just shift based on how fast things are moving past you. But for now I suggest you you hit every gear, this method requires only a little bump on the go go pedal, vice trying to reve up to match. In addition, I believe, this will keep you from looking for gear at the light because you stopped in to high of a gear.
A lot if not most companies will not hire a driver with zero experience unless they have a CDL School certificate. That was what I was referring to. It's a whole new world out there now.
