I drive an 03' Columbia with a series 60 detroit engine. Whenever I am idling it makes a brief griding noise then continues to idle. The noise occurs at random time intervals. Sometimes it is subtle and brief and othertimes it is very loud and actually causes the rpm's to slow down and then catch back up to idle speed.
Can anyone tell me what this could be? And is there an easy solution?

Ok does anyone have any actual suggestions to my engine problem?

Sounds to me like you're hearing gear rattle from the transmission. At certain idle speeds it becomes very noticeable and annoying at times.

Can you give us more details like when last overhaul done? How many miles? Last overhead was done?

He wasn't joking about checking rheldrain plug if the engine is coming apart" you might find metal there, bit really it could be anything, if its laboring the engine you need to find it before it blows up while in rush hour in bum freeking no where, is your air compressor gear or,belt driven, look at your alt is it woobling at the shaft check the blades in the turbo if equiped, and last, make sure" the muffler bearing has grease in it.
Mommas_money_maker Thanks this. -
In response to Mommas Money Maker, It has almost 900k miles and the last overhaul was done around 785k miles. I will talk to my boss about it, but I can already hear the complaining he will do. Somehow i'll be blaimed for it...
