It might grind less if you go to neutral, wait a second, then flip to high, bump rpm where you need then go in gear.

The friction material is worn from your high side synchronizer ring. It will run this way for thousands of miles but the downside is you are damaging the auxiliary drive gear in the process which is a couple hundred dollar part. If your transmission is high mileage you should consider getting g the whole thing gone through rather than the back box of you depend on this truck to make a living. Too many people have this issue as well as others in the front box but neglect to fix the whole thing and it can end up costing you more in downtime than it would to have gone through the whole thing in the beginning. The cost difference is 12-1500 for the back box vs 3450 for the whole thing with a warranty.

Got it fixed. Replaced the back box, $4350.00. 1 year/100,000 mile warranty. I was quoted $6,500 for the whole unit.
Shop said the main box looked ok.
I'll find out. Hopefully it will take a few years.

    Holy crap!
That's crazy for just back end.
Should of been $2000 tops. Parts and labour to do the back end.
You could of had a compleat exchange reman installed for the price you just paid.
Oh well, live & learn . Glad it's fixed.

We have all been there. I was given low estimate to get me in the shop. Then after its apart the higher price comes out. I knew it was a high price. \
Not much to do at 3pm on a Friday afternoon. They said at that price I would get my truck back on Monday morning.
Still had to wait until Wednesday morning.
    I was not happy.
Bend over and take it once in a while. It don't hurt anymore just doesn't feel good

If you got the estimate in writing, check the state law. Some states they can only charge a certain percentage over the estimate. Prevents shops from bending you over.

First estimate was for less work. A couple gears and cleaning. The work done was for the complete back box replaced and main box R and R. nothing but oil was replaced in main box. Rear box was ordered in Rebuilt.

If they informed you of the extra cost, before they continued, then not much you can do. But depending on your state law,if they just went ahead without notifying you, they get to eat part of the bill.
I live in Nc,here written estimates are capped at 10% without consent.
