If you can't do the load you have to say no no matter how much dispatch tries to intimidate the driver otherwise they're going to take advantage of it with other loads. As the saying goes you give them an inch they'll take a mile.

I've actually said that, verbatim... to the bossman. He gets it...eventually. He runs it, or it waits til i'm legal.

I've caught a lot of flack over the years from over-achievers who fudge their books to maximize their time available to work for my logging as much time as I do on line 4. Makes sense to me, though, because when Friday afternoon rolls around and they are needing people to work on Saturday, "I don't have the hours" ends the conversation and I'm free to go forward with my weekend plans. If you've got the hours, they don't care WHAT you have planned, they keep calling until you give in. Easier to just not have the hours.

You can't say no if you don't answer the phone to begin with. Wait, you can't say yes either. Qcomm goes into sleep mode 60 minutes after i turn ignition off and doesn't come back on until i turn the key to on 9.5 hours later. Anything between that time frame IS NOT MY PROBLEM.

    Me: No. Out of hours.
Them: But, but, but...we neeeeed you. If you don't do this, we'll pull that cherry load you booked for tomorrow.
Me: OK. Tell ya what. You put it in writing that you are coercing me to break federal law, and send it by Qualcomm or email. Do that and I'll run your load.
    Them: ....uh.....
Me: Oh and if I run that, you can cancel tomorrow's load right now. We'll both be far too busy. Me getting you fired, and you looking for a new job.

    Moron.

New drivers please do NOT fall for this crap. Run legal. The job you're at may suck, but keeping a clean CDL will get you outta there and into something better sooner than you think.

Weather, illness, HOS, broken equipment.... it's your call. That's why you'll be paying the ticket.

Try being a stupid fleet owner who gave the dispatcher his number. It went around to other dispatchers within minutes.

I get calls like this one every couple weeks, usually either at dinner time or 3 am - "I need you to TELL your driver that he needs to run this load for us, he is sitting near it and no one else is available".

SO this means I have to call the driver, no matter what time it is, ask him/her why am I getting the call to demand he/she takes the load and then call back to the dispatcher and tell them NO. I remind these dispatchers every time they call, the driver's decision is backed by me 100% no matter what.

Thank god for ELDs (I know I'll catch hell for that one) because it lessened the calls by 60% when they would think the driver had hours to do this "small run" for an "important customer" when the driver would be stuck somewhere for his 10 hour reset.
