Just want to throw this out here. I drove 3 years without a GPS, 5 with. Never going back to running without one, it's absolutely the one tool that has made life easier. I mean I know I'm not a real trucker now, and bridges should look out and all but I doubt they sell millions a year because they don't work. Thousands of people use them and don't hit bridges or take no truck routes. So if you don't have the smarts to see the big no truck signs or the 12 foot bridge sign and hit it with a GPS, you would probably hit it without a GPS. All the GPS does to the oblivious driver is provide an excuse.
Times a GPS comes in handy.
1. Fast country roads, hard to read little signs when running above 45.
2. When snow and ice completely cover the sign.
3. At night.
4. When a road is closed and you can't pull over. Think Chicago.
5. When the person who answers the phone doesn't speak the English.
6. When the only person to answer the phone has no idea how he gets to work.
7. When they just don't put up a sign. Again, think Chicago.
8. When they actually did put up a sign but let the trees grow over it.
9. When someone takes out a sign, probably a real trucker who didn't see the road sign in time and couldn't set up his turn right and drug the tandems over it.
Yeah, I'll keep Mr. Garmin, and you guy running those dedicated routes, I mean real truckers will just have to "keep it real".
Guys I'm freakin out. Please help.

I just want to thank each and every one of you for posting your opinions. You guys are amazing. Of course we have The typical "toothless, smoking, grouchy, smelly drivers" here tossing their 2 cents. But at the end of the day those are the ones that make this forum fun. Let's keep rolling theme wheels amigos.

Just out of curiosity was it 101 to 85? From the Bay Area and it isn't easy trucking there! My first trucking job was out of Oakland all local pickup and delivery and as a new Class A driver it was more than terrifying, especially considering the torn up highways and short merges.

Ah man I see trucks missing the signs all the time there! A tip for next time would be to stay on 101 until you hit 280, or getting off on Blossom Hill and hanging a left and then a right onto Monterey Highway. You can access all the industry in the city with those routes.
